Although Scott is still only 13, he has a long history in theatre. He began at UK Theatre School at the tender age of 5! He is the second Scottish Billy ever to play the part. He will be joined with Reece Barrett who will be sharing the part of Billy’s best friend Michael.

Victoria Palace welcomes new performer to Billy Elliot

Lemon will step in to replace Joanna Riding in the role of the quirky dance teacher Mrs Wilkinson (played by Julia Walters in the original film). Lemon is a renowned star of the stage in Australia, and has already performed the role at Melbourne Her Majesty’s Theatre and Sydney’s Capitol Theatre, for which she won several awards.

Lemon is a familiar face on screen from Australian shows Neighbours and The Flying Doctors. Her stage performances include a list of credits for Sydney Theatre Company including Merrily We Roll Along, Once In A Lifetime, The Madras House and The Seagull.

Another newcomer to the cast is Aaron Watson, who joins current Billy’s Rhys Yeomans, Oliver Gardner and Dean-Charles Chapman in the alternating title role.

Billy Elliot is set in Northern County Durham during the 1980’s miner’s strike, where a young boy swaps boxing gloves for ballet shoes and discovers a supreme talent. Mrs Wilkinson nurture’s his gift, but Billy must learn to dance despite the prejudices of his family.
The show recently celebrated its fifth birthday, which was attended by composer Elton john, director Stephen Daldry and writer Lee Hall.

Following the October 2000 film of the same name, which introduced Jamie Bell to the screen, screenplay writer Lee Hall decided to convert the touching tale to the stage. Accompanying his book and lyrics is music written by Sir Elton John.

Set in the North East during the time of the miners’ strike, Billy is a young lad with a spectacular ability and passion for ballet. Billy secretly abandons his boxing gloves to don ballet shoes and join the local dance class. His struggle to succeed against the poverty and judgment of his family is set against the backdrop of community strife. Within the story his touching relationship with dance teacher Mrs Wilkinson and friendship with her daughter makes for a heart warming story.

Billy Elliot premiered at the Victoria Palace Theatre in London in March 2005, winning four Oliver awards for Best New Musical, Best Choreographer, Best Sound Design and Best Actor (awarded to George Macguire, James Lomas and Liam Mower).

The hit musical is directed by Stephen Daldry, with choreography from Peter Darling, both of whom worked on the original film.

There are five youngsters who currently take it in turns to play the leading role of young Billy. The older Billy is played by Barnaby Meredith who has previously appeared in ‘Gypsy’ at the West Yorkshire Playhouse and ‘Great Expectations’ at Leeds Grand Theatre.

Sean Kingsley plays Mr Braithwaite. His previous stage credits include ‘The Drowsy Chaperone’, ‘Mamma Mia’ and ‘Les Miserables’. He has also graced our television screens in ‘Wire in the Blood’, ‘Merseybeat’ and ‘The Bill’.

Jo Riding plays Mrs Wilkinson. Her television credits include ‘Holby City’, ‘Heartbeat’ and ‘The Royal’. She played Sarah Brown in Richard Eyre’s fantastic production of ‘Guys and Dolls’ at the National Theatre and Eliza Doolittle in a West End production of ‘My Fair Lady’. She has also appeared in straight theatre where credits include ‘An Ideal Husband’ and ‘Hobson’s Choice’ at the Manchester Royal Exchange and ‘Blithe Spirit’ at Bath Theatre Royal.

Craig Gallivan plays Tony. His theatre credits include ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’, ‘Crime and Punishment’ at the National Theatre and ‘Days of Significance’ for the Royal Shakespeare Company. 20th Young star steps into the shoes of Billy Elliot

The theatre which currently stages the long-running ‘Billy Eliot’ faces Victoria Station. Victoria underground station desperately needs redeveloping to ease congestion and Transport For London intend to give the station a new ticketing hall, escalators and a tunnel in order to ease congestion.

The theatre and the Theatres Trust have been raising concerns that the works would cause major noise disruption and vibration in the auditorium during performances. They were also worried that the works would hamper their own expansion plans.

Everybody was set for a public enquiry but on the day it was due to start, the two parties reached an agreement.

The Underground work which will be completed in 2016 can now go ahead. Assurances have been given to the theatre that no construction will take place during performances and that techniques will be used which should prevent disturbance.

The theatre’s own development work will go ahead in 2016 once the work on the station has finished. The modernisation scheme will see an expansion of the backstage area and refurbishment of the front of house and auditorium.
