Blood Brothers had its West End premiere in 1983 at the Lyric Theatre. It reopened in 1988 at the Albery Theatre, before transferring to the Phoenix Theatre in London in 1991. Since then Blood Brothers has enjoyed great success as one of the West End’s best loved musicals.

Mrs Johnson is the central character of the play, and the role has been played by a long line of actresses including Kiki Dee, the Nolan Sisters, Clodagh Rogers, Stephanie Lawrence, Siobhan McCarthy and Lyn Paul. The production currently stars ex-Spice girl Melanie Chisholm, who has received critical acclaim for her performance. Joining Chisholm is Stephen Palfrey in the role of Mickey, Richard Reynard as Eddie and Phillip Stewart as The Narrator.

Blood Brothers tells the story of two twins separated at birth, after Mrs Johnson realises that she unable to raise the two boys together due to financial strain. She allows her employer Mrs Lyons, who cannot conceive, to adopt one of the boys, but is soon fired by Mrs Lyons who feels that Mrs Johnson pays too much attention to her adopted son. Seven years later the boys meet, and form an unbreakable friendship, becoming Blood Brothers.

A loving a long and illustrious run

The show originally opened in the West End on the 27th August 1988. Its first home was the Albery Theatre but it moved to its current home, the Phoenix Theatre in November 1991. The booking period for the show has just been extended for a further eight months so that it is now possible to book for this show through to the 31st of July 2010.

The show was written by Willy Russell who is perhaps best known for his plays such as ‘Stags and Hens’ and ‘Our Day Out’. Perhaps his best known pieces are two that were made into hit films, ‘Educating Rita’ and ‘Shirley Valentine’.

‘Blood Brothers’ tells the story, based in Liverpool, of two twins, separated at birth, who grow up in very different worlds. They are of course reunited by a twist of fate and the discovery of their mother’s secret. Amongst the show’s best loved numbers are ‘Bright New Day’, ‘Tell Me It’s Not True’ and ‘Marilyn Monroe’.

The show has won many awards and was voted the most popular British Musical of all time by the New York Times. The Sunday Times described the show as “Exhilarating. One of the best musicals ever written.”
