The Hampstead Theatre

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

The Hampstead Theatre is renowned for the production of new writing and association with innovative theatre companies. The upcoming season includes the exciting new play Canary, and theatre tickets are on sale now.

Canary is written by Jonathan Harvey, best-known for his stage play and film A Beautiful Thing. In Liverpool, during the 1960’s two lovers, both firmly in the closet, part ways. Later in 1980’s London, a pair of runaways find solace at the city’s biggest gay club, Heaven. In 2010, the paparazzo’s pursuit of a love story threatens the destruction of an entire family. Directed by Hettie McDonald, Canary is the moving, unflinching and honest tale of love and courage.

Jonathan Harvey has received multiple awards for his work, gaining initial recognition after being nominated for an Olivier Award for his play- Beautiful Thing. His plays Swan Song and Out in the Open were also premiered at the Hampstead Theatre. Harvey’s screen-writing credits include Beautiful People, Coronation Street and Gimme Gimme Gimme.

Hettie McDonald collaborates with Harvey again after originally directing Beautiful Thing for stage and screen.

Also coming to the Hampstead Theatre in London this summer are comedy double act Kit and The Widow, and Oscar Wilde’s Salome, brought to the stage by Rupert Goold’s Headlong Theatre in association with The Curve, Leicester.

English Touring Theatre (ETT) is undoubtedly one of the top theatre companies in the country. Last year’s highlights included ‘Entertaining Mr Sloane’ for theatre in London’s West End, which has recently received recognition in the list of nominees for this year’s Olivier Awards. There was also a wonderful version of Moliere’s ‘The Hypochondriac’ newly adapted by Roger McGough. This was originally produced in Liverpool before going on tour. ETT now repeat that winning formula with a new play by Jonathan Harvey, ‘Canary’ which arrives in London to play at the Hampstead Theatre in London from 19th May to 12th June. Theatre tickets are on sale now.

Jonathan Harvey wrote the comedy series ‘Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!’ and has also written for ‘Coronation Street’. His previous writing for the stage includes ‘Beautiful Thing.’

This play starts off in 1960s Liverpool and is described as “A deeply moving, funny, uplifting and often magical story about love, honesty and being brave enough to sing out at the top of your voice. With style.”

The show is directed by Hettie Macdonald, who previously worked with Harvey on ‘Beautiful Thing’. She has also directed episodes of ‘Dr Who’, ‘Wallander’ and ‘Casualty’ for television.
