Chicago at the Cambridge Theatre
Wednesday, April 21st, 2010In 1997 the hit musical Chicago opened at London’s Adelphi Theatre in London. Following hugely successful sales of theatre tickets and the 1998 Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding Musical Production, the show transferred to Covent Gardens Cambridge Theatre to continue its run.
Chicago, by Kander and Ebb, is set in the American city during the 1920s prohibition era, and tells the satirical tale of corruption and justice in the celebrity limelight. Roxie Hart is an aspiring vaudevillian who is arrested following the murder of her lover, which she tries and fails to pin on her dim witted husband. Sent to the women’s block in Cook County Jail, she encounters top vaudeville act and murderess of her husband and his lover, Velma Kelly. The two women then battle for the limelight as Roxie steals the media attention and Velma’s lawyer, Billy Flynn. The Chicago score includes songs such as All That Jazz, Razzle Dazzle and Mr Cellophane.
Playing the role of Roxie is award winning musical actress Ruthie Henshall, who has recently extended her run. Henshall originated as killer performer Roxie Hart when the show opened in 1997. Other West End show credits include Oliver!, Les Miserables, Children of Eden and her Laurence Olivier award winning performance in She Loves Me.
