Sadler’s Wells

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

In commemoration of the London Blitz 70th anniversary, Matthew Bourne will round up Sadler’s wells autumn season with a production of Cinderella. The show will run from November this year to January 2011, and theatre tickets are available to book now.

Cinderella was originally staged in on the West End in 1997, where Lez Brotherston won the Olivier Award for original staging. Brotherston returns to design the show, with lighting designer Neil Austin and sound designer Paul Groothuis creating a ‘surround sound’ effect.

The score, written by Prokofiev, is set in an ambience of wartime romance. Cinderella falls in love with a dashing RAF pilot, but they are parted by the horrific London Blitz. This new production features “a specially commissioned new recording of the score, New Adventures will create a cinematic experience, taking the audience into the heart of Prokofiev’s magnificent music and the sound world of war-torn London.”

Preceding Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella as part of the autumn season is new production Shoes, brought to us by Jerry Springer – The Opera writer Richard Thomas. Award-winning choreographer Stephen Mear will direct.

Other companies featured in the season are UK artists Rosemary Butcher and Jonathan Burrows, Rosas and American Ballet Theatre and Alvin Ailey. Pina Baush’s company Tantztheater Wuppertal will also be performing a tribute to the choreographer in the form of the momentous Iphigenie auf Tauris, which has never been performed in London.
