Fancy a Fat Pig?

Saturday, September 6th, 2008

If you want to see a top london show, but fancy a change from the glitzy musicals, why not check out ‘Fat Pig’, the comedy by Neil Labute.

The play has been so successful, that it transfers from the Trafalgar Studios to the Comedy Theatre, where it opens on the 11th September. Kevin Bishop, the rising star whose own TV series is currently running on Channel 4, takes over the role of Carter and he is joined by Nicholas Burns (the star of ‘Nathan Barley’) and Ella Smith.

Joanna Page from the award winning, ‘Gavin and Stacey’ will continue in her role until 11 October, when she will be replaced by Kelly Brook, the TV presenter, model and sometime fiancée of Hollywood star, Billy Zane.

Kelly’s last appearance on the London stage was in 2000 when she played the exotic dancer, Anya in ‘Eye Contact’ at the Riverside Studios.

Kelly has appeared as a glamour model in the Daily Star and in 2005 was voted the sexiest woman in the world by FHM magazine. She then went on to host ‘The Big Breakfast’ and ‘Celebrity Love Island’ and will soon be back on television screens in the second series of ‘Moving Wallpaper’.

BOOK FAT PIG TICKETS

Fat Pig is by American playwright Neil LaBute and promises to be a funny and heart warming play. It certainly has its moments but my one observation is that, with such a great cast of English comedy actors, it has been produced in its’ American format.

Tom meets Helen who is a plus size and they have a relationship that develops into a tender and loving romance. However Tom’s outspoken and bigoted work colleague objects to the relationship based on Helen’s size. Is Tom brave enough to confront, head on, this social bred complex that suggests ‘fat is unacceptable’? The issue is a predominant one which is why I feel it is such a shame not to have addressed it as an English play to an English audience but then maybe it wouldn’t have been so funny. Perhaps it would have been a little bit too close to home?

Robert Webb who co wrote and stars in ‘The Peep Show’ is fabulous as Tom and steals every scene from his co stars. Ella Smith is a very convincing American and plays her part beautifully, with just the right amount of vulnerability and self deprecation. Kris Marshall (from ‘My Family’) is the bad guy as he tries to convince Tom that due to her size, Helen is just not acceptable girlfriend material. Marshall tackles this role with obvious relish and portrays the bullish Carter with shocking accuracy, highlighting the unattractive attributes of the office boy who never grows up. Joanna Page who is the popular face from TV’s ‘Gavin and Stacey’ is part of the anti-fat feeling in Tom’s office. She excellently plays the part of the vindictive Jeannie, Tom’s ‘on, off’ girlfriend and sees his ‘deflection’ as a personal insult.

Whilst the American accents sometimes get lost, this is an ensemble of talented actors and ‘Fat Pig’ is definitely worth a look. They work very well together, with great timing and seemingly well developed relationships.

FAT PIG TICKETS – LIVE AVAILABILITY

Show Type: Comedy

Show Overview

Fat Pig is a wonderfully funny yet touching love story – the production is being held at Trafalgar Studios. When Tom and Helen meet they discover an instant attraction and begin to date. Their relationship however is beset with problems, not least of all from Tom’s work colleagues. This group of shallow, self obsessed individuals shamelessly mock Helen for generous size and although not ‘PC’, it is shockingly funny.

Kris Marshall is a fabulous comedy actor who is best known for his TV role in ‘My Family’. He has also starred oppisite Billie Piper in ‘Treats’ at the Garrick Theatre in 2007. Joanna Page is currently starring the hugely popular ‘Gavin and Stacey’.

Neil LaBute is an American film director, screen writer and playwright.
