Flashdance

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

As the hit musical Hairspray comes to an end, the Shaftesbury Theatre prepares itself for the next spectacular show. Flashdance The Musical will have its West End debut in September. Theatre tickets are on sale now.

Based on the film Flashdance, an iconic eighties blockbuster starring Jennifer Beals, the stage musical premiered on tour at the Theatre Royal Plymouth in 2008. It has received critical acclaim during its national tour, with a cast led by Victoria Hamilton-Barritt as Alex Owens. Also starring on tour, former ex-Hear’Say pop singer Noel Sullivan, Bernie Nolan and Bruno Langley. Casting for the West End London theatre show will soon be announced.

Flashdance The Musical follows the story of Alex Owens, a welder and exotic dancer from Pittsburgh, who dreams of becoming a professional ballet dancer. Alex lives alone in a converted warehouse, working at the steel mill during the day and dancing in a seedy tavern at night. Her aspirations of winning a place at the prestigious Pittsburgh Conservatory of Dance and Repertory seem no more than a pipe dream – that is until Nick Hurley, her boss at the steel mill, uses his contacts to secure her an audition. Theatre tickets are likely to sell quite fast, so it’s best to book for this performance sooner rather than later.

Nikolai Foster directs the show, with choreography from Strictly Come Dancing’s Arlene Phillips. Music for the show is by Robbie Roth, with lyrics by Rob Cary. The score features cult songs such as ‘Maniac’ and ‘What a Feeling’. Book is written by Cary and Tom Hedley.
