Grease

Saturday, June 12th, 2010

Grease has extended its run at the Piccadilly Theatre by another year, and theatre tickets are available to book through to September 2011.

Currently starring in the show as Danny Zuko is ex- Hear’say singer Noel Sullivan, alongside Siobhan Dillon in the principle role of Sandy. Both Sullivan and Dillon will remain in the roles until July this year. Robin Cousins, the former ice skating Olympic champion and current Dancing On Ice judge also stars in the show playing Teen Angel until June.

Grease opened in August 2007 at the Piccadilly Theatre in London, and is now the longest running show at the venue. On the 20 June 2009 it reached a massive 800 performances.

Grease is written by Warren Casey and Jim Jacobs, and features songs from J Farrar, B Gibb, S Simon and L St Louis. David Gilmore directs, with choreography from ex Strictly Come Dancing panel judge Arlene Phillips.

Grease tells the teenage love story of Danny and Sandy, who fall in love when they meet over the summer break. When Sandy turns up at Danny’s school, much to both of their surprise, his cool status is compromised, and he and Sandy must find a way to be together without affecting his T-Bird status. The score features songs such as ‘You’re The One That I Want’, ‘Hopelessly Devoted To You’ and ‘Grease is The Word’.

Grease

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

Grease continues its success at the Piccadilly theatre in London’s West End, starring Noel Sullivan from former band Hear’Say as Danny, and Siobhan Dillan, finalist from How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? as Sandy. Theatre tickets for the show are currently on sale.

Grease is the time honoured 1950’s musical about two young teenagers who fall in love when they meet over the summer High School break. When they return to Rydell High School, however, it is clear that they are from very different cliques. Danny Zuko is leader of the leather-clad T Birds and the epitome of cool, whilst straight laced, cardigan wearing Sandy is anything but, and comes under the scrutiny of female gang The Pink Ladies. What follows is a story of romance, teenage angst and love amidst a superb soundtrack of 1950’s music. John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John starred as the lead roles in the 1978 film version. Famous numbers from the score of Grease include Grease is The Word, You’re The One That I Want and Hopelessly Devoted to You.

New to the cast is Dancing On Ice judge and Olympic gold medal winner Robin Cousins, who will play Teen Angel.  Cousins has the graced the stage previously  in Roger and Hammerstein’s Cinderella and The Rocky Horror Show in London theatre, although is best known for his multiple gold medal achievements upon the ice and as a panel judge for the ITV show Dancing On Ice.

‘Grease’, the musical is in its third year at the Piccadilly Theatre and is already the longest running show in the theatre’s history. Theatre tickets are on sale for the show which is currently booking until 3 January 2010.

Noel Sullivan will be taking over the role of Danny Zuko from Ray Quinn. This is Noel’s first appearance in the West End and could be considered his big break although he has appeared in a few musicals before. These include ‘Simply Ballroom’, ‘What a Feeling’ and ‘Love Shack’.

He will join Emma Stephens, who plays his love interest Sandy. Before ‘Grease’, Emma was in ‘Starlight Express’ and ‘Saturday Night Fever’.

Stuart Ramsay plays Kenickie and has previously played in ‘Cats’ and ‘Les Miserables’.

‘Grease’ premiered on Broadway in 1972. The film which starred John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John became the biggest money-maker of any film musical ever.

The composers Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey wrote the show as a reaction against so called traditional musicals filled with show tunes. The current production includes all the hit songs from the film so is a different version to the original show. It has been in and out of the West End ever since, we have theatre tickets on sale for the current production.

Great way to spend an evening

West End theatres have started to go beyond the divide that has been between TV audiences and theatre audiences. Grease: The Musical does this spectacularly and draws in crowds that do not usually see themselves as theatre goers. This, of course, is helped along by the star studded cast.

The cast comprises of X Factor’s Ray Quinn from Liverpool and Danny Bayne from ITV talent finder fame. Grease simply explodes on the stage with the décor, music, singing, dancing and costumes that take the audience back roughly 50-years. Grease is a generation spanning musical that is great fun for all. The great cheap London theatre tickets on offer at Concierge Desk sweeten the deal. They make the trip into London doubly worthwhile for everyone.
