Grease is the word

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

It’s been the word ever since John Travolta told us so. What is it? Grease of course, that’s the word. The latest incarnation of Grease takes place in London’s West End in the Piccadilly Theatre, and is more of an explosion of light and colour than a word.

This Grease, much like many West End musicals in London Theatres right now, manages to transcend the Theatre/TV divide by attracting audiences not typically found in the theatre by having one of the reality TV stars of recent times in its line-up. Liverpool’s Ray Quinn, of X-Factor fame, stars as ‘Doody’. Ray was second to Leona Lewis in the X-Factor final in 2007. Playing the comedic role that he does, Ray is in his element and comes across like a true performer.

Ray isn’t the only reality TV star to take to the stage in this performance though, Danny Bayne, who won the ITV talent finder show ‘Grease is the Word’ still plays the lead of Danny. He’s now joined by Nicole Brazil as his new Sandy.

The show itself is the epitome of kitsch, with the stage adorned with fifties memorabilia. Directed by David Gilmore (for the second time in London’s West End) Grease is one of the biggest hits of the year in terms of theatre ticket sales.
