Greta Garbo Came to Donegal

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

The Tricycle Theatre in Kilburn has announced its first new production for 2010. ‘Greta Garbo Came to Donegal’ is by Irish playwright Frank McGuinness. It uses Garbo’s actual visit to Ireland in 1967 as a background to a number of stories. McGuinness’ previous plays have included ‘Gates of Gold’ and ‘Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me’, both of which played in the West End. Last year his version of ‘Oedipus’ played at the National Theatre.

Nicholas Kent directs and Robert Jones designs the show, which runs from 7th January to 20th February. Theatre tickets are already on sale.

The cast includes Angeline Ball, who first came to prominence in Alan Parker’s film ‘The Commitments’. Other films include ‘Brothers in Trouble’ and ‘A Tiger’s Tail’. Previous theatre includes ‘The Playboy of the Western World’ and ‘The Plough and the Stars’, both in Dublin.

Ball is joined by Tom McKay. His previous theatre includes ‘The Arab Israeli Cookbook’ at the Gate Theatre, ‘Henry V’ at the National Theatre, London, ‘Rough Cuts’ at the Royal Court and ‘Frost/Nixon’ in the West End.

Lucy Diveney is also in the cast. Her television credits include ‘The Story of Tracy Beaker’ and ‘The Green Green Grass’. Previous theatre credits include ‘Natural Selection’ at Theatre 503, and ‘John Gabriel Borkman’ at the Donmar Warehouse.
