Big hair has turned into a phenomenal hit!

Friday, September 25th, 2009

The star-studded musical comedy Hairspray hit the stage with a huge bang and has been entertaining audiences since the opening night. This romantic comedy has been such an overwhelming success. Since it opened in the Shaftesbury Theatre at 210 Shaftesbury Avenue in London, it has walked away with four different awards in two years.

So what is it about Hairspray that has made it the smash hit it’s become? It is a brilliant feel-good musical comedy about the life of Tracy Turnblud who has a very big hairdo and a heart of gold. The audience follows her journey as she sets out to dance her way into fame and juggle her family life.

It’s the complete story of the girl-next-door that wants to make it big, keep motivating her mother and get the boy of her dreams. It is an absolutely heart warming tale of love, life and hilarious comedy.

Hairspray’ continues to set the West End alight. It has been described as ‘the most happy, funny and sunny show in town’. If you don’t already know, it is set in Baltimore in 1962 and tells the story of Tracy Turnblad, an outsider who becomes a teen sensation.

The show first opened on Broadway on 18 July 2002 and played there for over six years. In the summer of 2007, the show not only opened in London’s West End, it also opened in Japan, Korea and South Africa. It won the Olivier Award for Best Musical in 2008 and the sales of theatre tickets continue, with no sign of the show’s popularity waning.

The show’s big budget shows up on stage with a cast of 35 and no less than 175 wigs used in the production. From 08 November there will be performances on Sundays which is good news for people spending a long weekend in London. Don’t forget, at Concierge Desk we allow you to book all your London theatre tickets in one place.

As well as the West End show continuing, there will also be a tour of ‘Hairspray’ in 2010 with Michael Ball reprising the role of Edna Turnblad which he recently stepped down from in the West End production. The tour will start in Cardiff and will also play Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, Southampton, Glasgow and Wolverhampton. It is currently scheduled until September 04, but additional dates are expected as are further announcements about the cast for the tour.
