Inherit the Wind

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

Trevor Nunn’s production of ‘Inherit the Wind’, by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E Lee, plays at the Old Vic until 20th December. It stars the theatre’s artistic director Kevin Spacey and David Troughton and has been attracting rave reviews so it would be best to get your theatre tickets for this show as soon as possible.

The play tells a story based on true events. The real life story was known as the Scopes monkey trial after the science teacher named Scopes who had taught Darwin’s theory of evolution.

Spacey is still a very bankable film star with credits including ‘The Men Who Stare at Goats’, ‘Superman Returns’  ‘Pay It Forward’ and ‘American Beauty’. His Broadway credits include ‘Hurlyburly’, ‘A Moon for the Misbegotten’ and ‘Lost in Yonkers’.

David Troughton is one of the United Kingdom’s greatest stage actors. Although a regular on our television screens, he is best known for his stage work. His theatre credits include ‘Playing With Fire’ and ‘Measure for Measure’ at the National Theatre and the title roles in ‘Richard II’ and both parts of ‘Henry IV’ for the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Also in the cast is Janine Duvitski. Her film credits include ‘The Madness of King George’ and ‘About a Boy’ but it is television appearances such as ‘One Foot in the Grave’, ‘Benidorm’ and ‘Abigail’s Party’ which have made her a household name. The ins and outs

Inherit The Wind is a play, directed by Sir Trevor Nunn and starring the big screen star, Kevin Spacey. If that is not enough to get you interested, then read on. This show will be opening in the beginning of autumn and provides you with the perfect choice for a date or a night out. There is nothing more comfortable, indulgent or enjoyable than a warm theatre, good entertainment and a laugh on a cold autumn or winter evening. We can offer great prices on theatre tickets here at Concierge Desk.

Inherit The Wind is based on a true story. The story is that of the Scopes trial of 1925. In this trial, a high school teacher stood trial for teaching his class about the theory of evolution outlined by Darwin.

This is a modern-day evolutionary theory that we take for granted, but it was blasphemy to say the least way back then. The trial was highly publicised back in the day and now it has been turned into a theatrical masterpiece for the entire world to enjoy. Just as much as it was illegal to teach evolutionary theories in Tennessee in 1925, it should be illegal to miss this theatrical genius.

Inherit the Wind’ was originally a play written in 1955 by Jerome Lawrence and Robert Edwin Lee. It was more famously a film in 1960 starring Spencer Tracey and Gene Kelly. It tells the true story of a teacher who was prosecuted for teaching Darwin’s theory of evolution. The court proceedings became known as the ‘monkey trial’ and took place in Dayton, Tennessee in the summer of 1925.

The original play will now be revived at the Old Vic. It will run from the 18th of September until the 20th of December and theatre tickets are already available for this show. It is directed by Trevor Nunn and will star Kevin Spacey and David Troughton. They are joined by an excellent cast including Paul Birchard, Adam Booth, Sonya Cassidy, Sam Cox, Mark Dexter, Janine Duvitski, Nicholas Jones, Sam Phillips, Vincent Pirillo, Susan Tracy and Janet Whiteside.

The production marks the 150th anniversary of Darwin’s ‘Origin of Species’ being published.

Kevin Spacey is the Artistic Director of the Old Vic but is also known for Hollywood movies such as ’LA Confidential’, ‘The Usual Suspects’ and ‘American Beauty’. David Troughton has been one of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s leading actors for many years. Roles for them include Richard III and Bolingbroke in ‘Richard II’.
