Jerusalem
Monday, February 15th, 2010The Royal Court Theatre offers fantastic value for money. The average price for theatre tickets at this venue in Sloane Square is far lower than it is for most West End shows, yet the production values of the shows there are always of the highest. Add to this some of the most comfortable leather seats anywhere in theatre land, a fantastic bar and dining area in the basement and a bookshop with some of the cheapest scripts around and you have a theatregoer’s delight.
They also produce some fantastic plays. One of their biggest hits of 2009 was ‘Jerusalem’ by Jez Butterworth which is getting its well deserved transfer to the West End where it will play at the Apollo Theatre until 24th April. Theatre tickets are on sale but the fantastic reviews this show has received along with the strictly limited run mean they will sell fast.
The play is directed by Ian Rickson who is a regular collaborator with the writer Jez Butterworth. Ian was artistic director at the Royal Court for many years and other shows include ‘The Hothouse’ at the National Theatre in London and, last year, ‘Hedda Gabler’ on Broadway. It boasts a fine ensemble cast, but the star is undoubtedly Mark Rylance.
