Thursday, May 13th, 2010Star of the London stage Simon Russell-Beale is currently appearing at the National Theatre in London Assurance, alongside actress Fiona Shaw.
This hilarious five act comedy from Dion Boucicault was first produced at the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden, and was his first major West End success.
Sir Harcourt Courtly is lured to Oak Hall, Gloucestershire, away from the epicentre of London society, upon the promise of a beautiful, young and wealthy bride Grace. Upon his arrival at Oak Hall however, Harcourt immediately falls for Grace’s cousin Lady Gay Spanker (Shaw), a hearty woman and avid foxhunter. Meanwhile Harcourt’s son Charles arrives at the mansion in disguise, having fled from his creditors in London, and Charles proceeds to fall in love with Grace. Upon discovering the young pair, Lady Spanker, by Charles’s persuasion, begins a courtship with Harcourt, much to the displeasure of her husband Dolly.
Simon Russell-Beale is one of the most widely regarded actors upon the London stage, and has an endless list of credits from Spamalot at The Palace Theatre in London, to The Life of Galileo, The Alchemist, Much ado About Nothing, Major Barbara and Hamlet (also at the National Theatre).
Fiona Shaw has appeared on the National stage in Happy Days, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Mother Courage and Her Children and Richard III.
London Assurance follows Oedipus and Much Ado About Nothing as part of the Shell Series of classical drama.
