Hit ABBA musical Mamma Mia! continues its success on the West End, with theatre tickets flourishing as ever. New to the cast from 14th June is Harriet Thorpe, a regular face on the West End, taking over the role of the glamorous Tanya.

Thorpe has spent the last two years performing the role of Madame Morrible in top selling show Wicked. Prior to this she has been seen in fellow West End musicals Les Miserables and Cabaret. Roles in Absolutely Fabulous and The Brittas Empire have also made her a familiar face on screen.

Mamma Mia! is inspired by the chart topping Swedish group ABBA, and features a score taken entirely from their soundtrack, and composed by former members Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson. The story centres on Donna, a former singer living in the Greek Islands with her daughter Sophie, who is soon to be married. Sophie’s father is absent; however she is desperate to have him give her away on her wedding day, so invites three of her mother’s former lovers to the island in the hope of discovering him. When Donna realises what has happened her heart is soon reawakened.

Thorpe replaces Jane Gurnett as the sophisticated, man-hungry Tanya, alongside cast members Linzi Hately (Donna) and Jessie May (Sophie). Also in the cast are Christopher Hollis, Paul Ryan, Catherine Russell and Norman Bowman.

The musical based on, and featuring, the songs of Abba, is one of the West Ends most successful money spinners. In fact, the only current musicals which have been running longer are ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ and ‘Les Miserables’.

The show opened in London on the 6th of April 1999 exactly twenty five years, to the day, after Abba won the Eurovision Song Contest. Since then 19 productions of the show have opened around the world and a film of the show has been made.

The London production originally opened at the Prince Edward Theatre but moved to its current home, the Prince of Wales Theatre in 2004.
The cast includes Katie Brayben, Jodie Read, Laura Selwood, Jane Gurnett, Joanna Monro, Paul Ryan, Andrew Hall and Gerard Leighton Duffy.

The musical is set on a Greek island and tells the story of a daughter’s quest to discover the identity of her father. It could be one of three men and she brings them back to the island they had visited twenty years before in an attempt to find someone to walk her down the aisle as her wedding approaches.

Well, we all know that Mamma Mia tickets are like gold dust. If anything, the release of the cinema version has had a beneficial effect on sales of tickets for the show.

The interaction between shows and the films they spawn (or vice versa) is an interesting one. A particularly noticeable example of this was Mel Brooks’ film, ‘The Producers’ which was a comedy film which, incidentally, included extracts from a spoof musical. This was adapted into a stage musical. There was then a film made of the stage version. Mr Brooks could hardly be happier!

Perhaps the other major development in musical theatre over the last few years is that of a show built around the songs of a particular artiste. Mamma Mia ticks this box as well, and is currently joined in the best selling West End shows by ‘Jersey Boys’ featuring the hits of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons and ‘We Will Rock You’ featuring the hits of Queen.

‘Our House’, the Madness musical is being revived, and the latest show to mine this particular seam of gold is ‘Come Dancing’, a musical by Ray Davies of the Kinks.

However, this show is slightly different in that Davies only uses three songs from his extensive back catalogue including the title track and one of the Kinks’ biggest hits, ‘Tired of Waiting For You’.

Following the smash hit success of the London Theatre show Mamma Mia!, audiences are now spoilt for choice, being able to also see the blockbuster movie version.

Mamma Mia! – The Movie has had a special sing-along version released in the US and UK which is guaranteed to give you a fun night. Giggle with your friends and family and belt out your favourite songs, such as “Money Money Money”, “Dancing Queen”, “Voulez-Vous” and more.

Mamma Mia! fever is gripping London. Audiences are skipping out of the Prince of Wales Theatre one night, and hopping into their local Odeon the next. It’s hard not to imagine the sing along version becoming as famous as the The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The question is; instead of fishnet tights, will everyone arrive wearing spangly flared trousers?

The stage show is getting a boost from its cinematic counterpart. Tickets for Mamma Mia! continue to sell and sell; soon the show will have been seen by nearly five million theatre-goers, clocking up over three and a half thousand performances.

Whichever experience you choose, both the movie version and the stage version are guaranteed to make you leave the auditorium with a huge smile on your face.

The Mamma Mia name just goes from strength to strength! Last night I went to see the new movie adaptation of the groundbreaking musical, and although skeptical to begin with i must admit I thoroughly enjoyed the film. It is a great fun, feel good movie, and we all had a good laugh!

That said, my suspicions that there was not a chance on this earth that the silver screen could really re-create the magic of the live musical of Mamma Mia at the Prince of Wales Theatre were well and truely confirmed! Much as I enjoyed the movie, it really wasn’t a patch on the real thing, and Mamma Mia ticket sales would suggest there are many others that agree. Since the opening of the movie, we at Concierge Desk have witnessed a tenfold increase in the sale of Mamma Mia tickets. I guess this is inevitable, with a huge increase in media coverage and advertising, it makes sense that the increased awareness of the Mamma Mia brand would result in a greater interest in the london show as well as the movie.

Based on the music of super group Abba, Mamma Mia first hit the London stage in 1999, and has continued to be the West End’s most popular musical, having been seen by an audience of over 30 million worldwide. We thought the immense popularity could not last forever, let alone get any bigger, but the release of Mamma Mia! The Movie seems to have resulted in just that!

If you have not yet seen Mamma Mia The Movie, I would thoroughly recommend it. If you have not even seen London stage show of Mamma Mia, I would recommend this even more!

Mamma Mia tickets are in great demand at present, and there are a number of performances that you may have trouble in obtaining availability for. Unlike many of our competitors on the world wide web, Concierge Desk have live links to multiple ticket suppliers, so there is a good chance that you will be able to obtain tickets with Concierge Desk for performances sold out on the majority of these alternative web sites.

We also offer fantastic value Mamma Mia show and meal packages, which include your Mamma Mia ticket and a 2 course dinner at Michelin star chef, Marco Pierre White’s ‘Criterion Restaurant‘.

The incredible success of the Mamma Mia brand is a testament to the genius of Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, so come and enjoy this classic show and book tickets for the london show Mamma Mia today!
