Not The Messiah

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

After the huge success of ‘Spamalot’ which was for a time, one of the hottest theatre tickets on Broadway and in the West End, Eric Idle had to think long and hard about how he should follow-up the show. After all, ‘Spamalot’ had seemed an obvious idea, a musical version of one of Monty Python’s two biggest films ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail’. Surely it wouldn’t be as easy to think of such a good idea a second time. Then, divine inspiration struck. Why not do a musical theatre adaptation of the other one of Python’s two biggest films. Thus ‘Not the Messiah (He’s a Very Naughty Boy)’, an adaptation of ‘Life of Brian’ was born.

It is going to have its European premiere at the Albert Hall on the 23rd of October and it will form part of Monty Python’s 40th anniversary celebrations. That’s right the cult comedy, ‘Monty Python’s Flying Circus’ first hit our television screens in 1969. The show will feature Eric Idle, Michael Palin, Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam.

It seems Python is as popular as ever. One of the stand-out shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this year promises to be a new play called ‘Pythonesque’ which tells the story of how the six members of Python met and presents that story as a Monty Python style series of sketches.
