Oliver!

Saturday, July 10th, 2010

Following in the acclaimed footsteps of Rowan Atkinson, Omid Djalili and Griff Rhys-Jones, Russ Abbott it set to reprise the role of Fagin in musical hit Oliver!, following a stint during April 2009 whilst Rowan Atkinson was off with injury. Theatre tickets are extremely popular in the West End, and early booking is advisable.

Oliver!, directed by Rupert Gold, is currently showing  at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, and broke box office records after Jodie Printer was cast in the role of Nancy following hit television panel show “I’d Do Anything”. Kerry Ellis currently appears in the role opposite Steven Hartley as Bill Sykes and Griff Rhys-Jones who will play Fagin until 14 June, when Russ Abbott will take over.

Oliver! Is a heart-warming tale that follows the adventures, trials and tribulations of the young orphan Oliver as he tries to find a place to belong in London. When Oliver becomes entwined with a gang of young pick pockets – raised and trained by the miserly Fagin – he encounters the likes of Nancy, a prostitute who tries to save him. However Bill Sykes has other ideas.

The score of Oliver! Features songs such as “Where is Love”, “As Long As He Needs Me”, “Pick a Pocket or Two” and “Oliver!”

Comedian Russ Abbott is recognised for his 1980’s television sketch series The Russ Abbott Show. His appearances on the West End include Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Producers, Caught in the Net and My Fair Lady.

Who doesn’t know the story of Oliver Twist, the 9 year old boy and his adventures as a child in the infamous Work House during the Victorian era. Many people have experienced all the emotions of what life was like for a child in such circumstances.

Oliver Twist is one of the most loved stories ever written by Charles Dickens. Oliver, the Musical has broken all box office records with its current run and is estimated to run into 2011. This in itself tells the story of exactly how popular this theatre production is.

Omid Djalili as Fagin

djalili

Omid Djalili first came to the public’s attention as an Iranian stand-up comedian. He is in fact, half-British but has always been happy to make the most from his Iranian heritage. He has also built something of a film career having appeared in ‘Spy Game’, ‘Gladiator’, ‘The Mummy’, ‘Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow’ and ‘Pirates of the Caribbean III’. He also provided the voice of Tiger in the DreamWorks animated feature ‘Over The Hedge’.

He appeared in Whoopi Goldberg’s failed sitcom ‘Whoopi’ for two seasons in the United States and has also been in two series of ‘Small Potatoes’ for Channel Four. His most recent television work was his own show for BBC 1.

He is now to make a splash in a London show. He will take over from Rowan Atkinson in the role of Fagin in one of the West End’s biggest hits at the moment, ‘Oliver’. He takes over from July the 20th and joins Jodie Prenger, the winner of the BBC reality show which sought an actress to play the role of Nancy.

Both Djalili and Prenger are scheduled to appear in the show until December the 12th 2009. The show is playing at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, and you can purchase your Oliver tickets from Concierge Desk London.

‘Oliver’ is currently running at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane and stars reality TV winner Jodie Prenger and Rowan Atkinson.

Probably one of Charles Dickens best loved novels, it has been a West End hit before, most recently at the Palladium in 1994, but never has it been under such public scrutiny as Lionel Bart’s current revival presented by Cameron Mackintosh. Jodie Prenger won the coveted role of Nancy in the BBC show ‘I’d Do Anything’. The public choice has once again proved to be the right one, following on from Connie Fisher’s huge success as Maria in ‘The Sound of Music.’

Jodie undoubtedly brings the caring warmth to Nancy that Dickens originally wrote about. The sometimes girlfriend of Bill Sykes, feels nothing but pity for the orphan boys in Fagin’s dubious care. And when Oliver is bought into the fold, she sees in him as an innocent in need of saving. Her desire to help him, lands her in big trouble with the evil Sykes. It is the tragedy of Victorian England with the motherless boys at the mercy of villains and thieves. For most of them, like the Artful Dodger, they are able to make the most out of their street life and for most, it is a more bearable existence than the alternative option of a work house.

All the boys in this production are delightfully played and bring the stage alive with their terrific acting and the sense of camaraderie.

Directed by Rupert Goold, ‘Oilver’ is a great family show full of some of the best loved musical numbers, including ‘I’d do Anything’, ‘Food Glorious Food’, ‘Consider Yourself’ and ‘As Long as He Needs Me.’ The life and colour of the set is a real eye opener and Victorian England is bought to glorious life with the superb staging and costume.

The cast of ‘Oliver’ light up the stage with some truly great performances. Rowan Atkinson, as suspected, is funny as Fagin and although he will not be remembered for his singing, his portrayal of one of Dickens’ famous characters is well worth a visit.

Concierge Desk are proud to be able to offer Oliver tickets for for this magical West End musical.
