Shakespeare’s Othello

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

All Shakespeare’s plays are still as popular today as they were centuries ago and the tragedy of Othello moves audiences with many raw human emotions. Othello explores love, jealousy, hatred desire and racism that is still relevant in today’s modern world. This is a dark play that opens up the deepest and darkest human emotions as we feel them with Othello and Iago.

We see Othello’s marriage shattered by the rage that fuels Iago’s jealousy because he was overlooked for promotion. Iago deliberately sets out to turn Othello’s life into a shambles with his carefully told lies. Iago keeps a friendly face turned towards Othello while he stokes the fires of mistrust through misinformation.

The play moves to its heartbreaking finale when Othello, believing Iago’s lies, murders his beloved wife Desdemona. He suspects that she cheated on him and ends his own life. Othello is a superb rendition of all the base human emotions that have driven people throughout the ages to commit crimes of hate and passion. Othello is superbly played by Lenny Henry that gives an outstanding performance in this, one of Shakespeare’s greatest masterpieces.
