Ruined
Saturday, June 19th, 2010The Almeida, renowned for the production of innovative, cultural drama, is currently staging the Pulitzer Prize winning play Ruined by Lynn Nottage. The show has received critical acclaim for its UK premiere, and theatre tickets are on sale now.
Ruined is set in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where Mama Nadi has a bar in a small mining town, and only her rules apply. No politics, no arguments and no guns. However when two young girls arrive they carry with them shame and dishonour, and Mama’s personal loyalties and business priorities are put to the test, as she can no longer hold at bay the atrocities and government militia in the reality of civil war.
Lynn Nottage’s previous works include Fabulation, shown at the Tricycle Theatre in 2006, and Intimate Apparel.
The Goodman Theatre Chicago originally commissioned Ruined before its premiere in February 2009 at the Manhattan Theatre Club. Besides winning the Pulitzer Prize, Ruined also received the New York Critics Circle Award for Best Play, plus four OBIE Awards and two Drama Desk Awards.
Jenny Jules leads a cast comprising of David Ajale, Amole Adele, Michelle Asante, Kehinde Fadipe, Okezie Morro, Silas Carson, Wunmi Mmosaku, Joel Kangudi and Steve Toussaint.
Ruined runs at the Almeida until 5 June, and will be followed by Through A Glass Darkly starring Ruth Wilson.
