The 39 Steps

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

The 39 Steps show has been running since 2005 and since its successful transfer to the west end’s Criterion theatre in 2007, theatre ticket sales have continued to flourish. Joining the new cast is Dianne Pilkington, better known for her role as Glinda in the hit musical Wicked at the Apollo Victoria.

The 39 Steps is adapted from John Buchan’s 1915 novel of the same name, and was previously translated to film in 1935 by Alfred Hitchcock. It premiered at The West Yorkshire Playhouse in 2005, with featured actors Mark Hadfield, Robert Whitelock, Simon Gregor and Lisa Jackson. Later revised at The Tricycle Theatre in 2006, it had its West End London theatre Debut in 2007, and has since grown into a multi-award winning comedy.

The play centres on Richard Hannay, a London Bachelor who, after inviting a woman claiming to be a spy back to his home, finds her murdered the next morning. He flees to Scotland, becoming a fugitive, where he fights for the answers to prove his innocence. Four actors play 150 roles in this fast paced, quick-witted production.

Diana Pilkington will play Annabel Schmidt, Margaret and Pamela, alongside actor David Bark-Jones (Hannay), Timothy Speyer (man 1) and Jeremy Swift (man 2). Besides Wicked, Pilkington’s previous theatre credits include Grizabella in Cats, Kim in Taboo, Mary in Tonight’s the Night and Belinda in The Far Pavilions.

David Bark-Jones has been seen at The National Theatre in London in The Forrest and Dealers Choice.

The 39 Steps

Monday, March 29th, 2010

‘The 39 Steps’ continues its incredible run at the Criterion Theatre in London and currently has theatre tickets available for performances up until 23rd October.

This hilarious comedy is based on the Alfred Hitchcock film which, in turn, was based on John Buchan’s novel about the heroic Richard Hannay. A cast of four play what seems like a cast of hundreds. All of the film’s great sequences are recreated. You’ll see the Flying Scotsman on stage, witness a thrilling chase across the Forth Bridge and even witness a bi-plane crash.

The whole show is underpinned with huge amounts of silliness. It even manages to send itself up whilst keeping all the great plotting and intrigue of the original.

Richard Hannay is played by John Hopkins. His previous stage credits include ‘The Country Wife’ in the London West End theatre and many appearances for the Royal Shakespeare Company including ‘Antony and Cleopatra’, ‘The Tempest’, ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ and ‘King John’. His television credits include ‘Love In a Cold Climate’, ‘Nicholas Nickleby’ and ‘Robin Hood’. His films include ‘The Swimming Pool’ and Tim Burton’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’.

Natalie Walter is the female member of the cast. She has also worked extensively with the Royal Shakespeare Company where productions include ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ and ‘Loves Labours Lost’.

The 39 Steps

The Criterion Theatre is at the heart of the West End, right next to Piccadilly Circus where Shaftesbury Avenue crosses Regent Street. It has been the home for a number of years for one of the funniest shows in London’s theatre land. ‘The 39 Steps’ is an adaptation of the Alfred Hitchcock film of the same name, which is in turn an adaptation of John Buchan’s novel. Theatre tickets are on sale now.

The novel was first published in 1915 and is the first of a number which feature Buchan’s very own adventure hero Richard Hannay. The play, whilst staying true to the story, is an affectionate parody of the genre and the film version in particular. The production shows no sign of tiring or closing. However, the sooner you book theatre tickets for this show, the sooner you will be able to go back and see it again and again as many of the play’s fans do.

The show is also playing Liverpool for Christmas and goes on an extensive UK and Ireland tour in 2010 that is currently expected to end in June.

The play has all the characters from the film but they are played by only four actors. John Hopkins plays Hannay throughout. Natalie Walter plays various attractive women. Stephen Ventura and Stephen Critchlow play the rest of the cast, including the other women.

The story

The celebrated Alfred Hitchcock created the 1939 film of the same name based on the 1915 John Buchan novel, The 39 Steps. This enthralling story has now turned theatrical in order to entertain an even wider audience than before. Believe it or not, in The 39 Steps there is only a minute cast of four actors that take on the hefty task of starring in a whopping 150 roles.

If that is not talent then goodness knows what is. The story revolves around a secret agent hero who returns after a mission to start a new life in London. However, our charming stiff-upper-lip hero finds himself drawn back into the world of undercover agency work once more. This is a show that is certainly not to be missed by any theatre fan.
