The Almeida Theatre

The full cast joining Ruth Wilson in Through A Glass Darkly at The Almeida Theatre has now been announced. Ian McElhinney, Dimitri Leonidas, and Justin Salinger are to appear in the show, directed by the Almeida’s artistic director Michael Attenborough. Theatre tickets are on sale now.

Through A Glass Darkly is a stage play adapted by Andrew Upton from the film by Ingmar Bergman. The story follows the troubled Karin, who takes a holiday with her husband, brother and father, all struggling to help her and arguing with each other. However Karin soon realises that the only person that can help her is herself.

Attenborough was previously united with McElhinney in There Came A Gypsy Riding, also at the Almeida. They have also worked together at the Hampstead Theatre in The Sons Of Ulster Marching Towards The Somme and in the RSC’s production of Amphibians.

Leonidas is best known on screen for performances in Grange Hill, The Bill and Doctors, as well as the film Tormented.

Salinger has made regular appearances at the National Theatre in London where his credits include The Seagull, Dealer’s choice, Pillars Of The Community, Our Class and The Cat In The Hat.

Through A Glass Darkly commences in June and runs at the Islington based theatre until July. It follows the Almeida’s European premiere of Pulitzer-Prize play Ruined by Lynn Nottage.

The Almeida Theatre

Monday, April 26th, 2010

The Almeida Theatre in London promises its audience a diverse range of drama from British and international artists. Its reputation for producing integral work has helped the continuing sale of theatre tickets at The Almeida, allowing it to grow from a local theatre to a revered establishment.

This London theatre’s current programme sees Roy Kinnear and Anna Maxwell Martin starring in Michael Attenborough’s Measure for Measure by William Shakespeare. Set in modern dress, Attenborough’s production conveys Viennese debauchery in the shape of prostitution and fornication, which have become commonplace. Vying for change, the Duke Vincento places Angelo as head of the city, and returns disguised as a Friar to watch his rule. What then follows are sins of lust, weakness, and manipulation, as the moral scales continue to tilt toward corruption.

Following Measure for Measure is Ruined, which sees life in a small town during civil war when two girls tainted with a past arrive at the Democratic Republic of Congo, bringing tensions to the town and disrupting Mama Nadi’s rule of peace. Ruined is by acclaimed writer Lynn Nottage, whose previous work includes Intimate Apparel and Fabulation.

Ruth Wilson is then set to star in Through a Glass Darkly, by Ingmar Bergman. Wilson plays Karin, a young wife, sister and daughter taken on a recuperative holiday by her family, where the entanglement of relationships follow until Karin takes charge of her own destiny.
