The Arcola
Tuesday, April 6th, 2010The Arcola Theatre is premiering Hollywood actor Laurence Fishburne’s play Riff Raff this April. Theatre tickets are currently on sale.
The show was first produced in the US starring Fishburne himself, and tells the story of drugs, murder and the bleak fate of criminal lives in New York’s underworld. It’s Halloween, and Billy and Mike, two half brothers, are trapped in an abandoned crack den with three kilos of cocaine. With the biggest drug lord in New York baying for their blood, Mike asks for help from an old friend. His arrival at the scene prompts tested loyalties and threatens a hopeless end to their predicament.
Laurence Fishburne is best known for his role as Morpheus in The Matrix trilogy. He won a tony award on Broadway in 1992 playing Sterling Johnson in Two Trains Running by August Wilson, and in 1993 was nominated for the Best Actor Oscar for his role as Ike Turner in What’s Love Got To Do With It?
Bill Buckhurst directs the UK premiere at the Arcola Theatre in London.
Also at the Arcola this spring is Me, As A Penguin, written by Tom Wells and directed by Chris Hill. This comedy tells the story of Stitch, who has started experimenting with the Hull gay scene whilst staying with his pregnant sister Liz, and her lazy partner Mark. Surreal events involving Battenberg cake, knitting and penguin costumes are adeptly exercised in this impressive comedy. Theatre tickets are on sale.
