The Great Game: Afghanistan

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

The Tricycle Theatre in London, Kilburn, is set to stage another production as part of a cycle of plays depicting the history and culture of Afghanistan. Previews begin on 23rd July, and theatre tickets are on sale now.

The Great Game: Afghanistan receives a world premiere from Lee Blessing, alongside a cycle of short plays that played for the first time last season by a troupe of acclaimed writers. Amongst these are Simon Stephens, Richard Bean, Abi Morgan, Ben Ockrent, Colin Teevan, David Grieg, David Edgar, Joy Wilkinson, Amit Gupta, Ron Hutchison and Stephen Jeffreys.

The Great Game: Afghanistan is a collection of short plays spanning 175 years of Afghanistan’s history. Alongside the plays, documentary maker and Iranian writer Siba Shakib has penned three moving monologues, and secretary of the Guardian Richard Norton Taylor includes several real life extracts from a series of interviews between Afghan politicians and British and American Generals.

Artistic director Nicholas Kent, who has directed the show with Indhu Rubasingham (with assistance from Rachel Grunwald) said of the returning season: “The original intention in mounting The Great Game was to inform audiences of the history of Western involvement in Afghanistan since the early 19th century until the present day. The recent Obama Afpak policy review, the continuing ISAF operations in Helmand and in Afghanistan generally, and the mounting military and civilian casualty figures emphasise the importance of this.”
