The Hostage
Friday, February 5th, 2010Southwark Playhouse Theatre in London is setting out its stall to become one of the best fringe theatre venues in London in 2010. They are starting the year with a production of Sheridan’s classic comedy ‘The Rivals’ with a talented cast including Celia Imrie, Charity Wakefield and Ella Smith. They then follow it with a timely revival of Brendan Behan’s ‘The Hostage’ which runs from 3rd until 20th February. Theatre tickets for both productions are on sale now.
The production is by Jagged Fence, one of the best theatre companies working in London. The play, which is directed by Adam Penford, is set in 1958 and tells the story of the IRA taking an English soldier hostage and the eventual, explosive outcome of that situation. It is full of Behan’s wonderfully dark humour and even includes traditional Irish song and dance.
The show features a cast of thirteen, and promises to be quite a spectacle. Christopher Doyle not only acts in the play but is also responsible for the Irish dance choreography. He recently played the Scarecrow in the Lancaster Dukes Theatre production of ‘The Wizard of Oz.’
Emily Dobbs also stars. Her previous theatre credits include ‘Ours’ at the Finborough Theatre and ‘Can’t Stand Up For Falling Down’ at the Arcola.
