The Rose Theatre
Friday, May 14th, 2010Since Peter Hall’s arrival as Artistic Director, The Rose Theatre in London, Kingston, has had a line of critically acclaimed productions, starring faces old and new, and Hall’s latest drama 11 And 12 is a moving tale of race, tolerance and faith. Theatre tickets are on sale now.
The production, which is based on the book by Amadou Hampate Ba, recounts his relationship from childhood to adult with Tierno Bokar, a Malien Sage.
Set in West Africa before WWII, at the time of French colonialism, the story is retold in the form of a fable, as audience an Amadou learn about different religions, and the importance of acceptance and peace between cultures. As the land divides, Amadou is educated in a white community school and eventually earns a job working as a scribe under the French administration. With the ever widening gap between cultures comes an argument between the black and white religious communities over an Islamic prayer. The title of the play is taken from the dispute – over how many times the prayer should be recited, 11 or 12. Tierno Bokar and Charif Hamallah, the two opposing chiefs, must meet in an attempt to find understanding and tolerance of each others beliefs.
The show previously played at the Barbican Theatre in London. Cast members include Maximilien Seweryn, Abdou Ouologuem, Khalifa Natour, Jared McNeil, Tunji Lucas, Makram J Khoury and Antonio Gil Martinez.
