The Royal Court – Jerwood Theatre Upstairs

Friday, July 30th, 2010

The Royal Courts smaller venue, the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs, will be premiering two new plays by graduates of the venue’s Young Writers’ programme. Newcomers Nick Payne and EV Crowe will make their court debuts from September this year. Theatre tickets are on sale now.

First to premiere is Wanderlust by Nick Payne, which will run in the upstairs venue from 9th September to 9th December. Wanderlust explores the relationship between sex and intimacy, and whether they can exist together. Simon Godwin, associate of Bristol Old Vic, will direct.

EV Crowe’s Kin is billed as an “intricate and anarchic view of what really goes on when ten-year-olds are away from home”, and will run from 19th November to 23rd December. Kin is directed by deputy artistic director of the Royal Court Jeremy Herrin.

Also premiering in the Theatre Upstairs is Red Bud by Brett Neveu. Jo McInnes will direct this new play, which will be the first by Chicago-based Neveu to receive a major UK outing. Red Bud is about the “creeping spread of middle age” as friendships fade.

The Royal Court has also offered a glimpse of the 2011 programme, which will include the premiere if the new Simon Stephens play Wastewater, directed by Katie Mitchell. The play is divided into three parts, which will be shown to audiences during one night but in differing orders.

The Royal Court

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

The Royal Court Theatre in London is renowned for its production of innovative new writing, and has announced the premiere of two new shows this season. Theatre tickets for Ingredient X and Sucker Punch are on sale now.

Ingredient X will play upstairs at the Royal Court, and stars actress Lesley Sharp (seen most recently in The Rise and Fall of Little Voice with X-Factor finalist Diana Vickers) alongside Indira Varma and James Lance.

Frank (Lance) is a recovering alcoholic married to Katie (Varma). This sharp comedy follows his struggle with addiction, and that of Rosanna – neighbour to Frank and Katie and addicted to the X-Factor.

Following Ingredient X is Sucker Punch, a play exploring “what it was like to be young and black in the eighties”. Leon Davidson and Troy Augustus are former friends, but now stand opposite each other in the corners of the ring. Actors Daniel Kaluuya and Anthony Welsh have undergone training from British boxer Errol Christie, former European champion, to prepare for the roles of Leon and Troy.

Deborah Bruce directs Ingredient X while Sacha Wares is behind Sucker Punch, playing in the Jerwood downstairs at the Royal Court, where the stage will be converted to a live boxing ring.

The Royal Court

Theatre tickets are now on sale for The Royal Court’s premiere of a new political satire. Posh, featuring a cast of 14 young actors, comes to the stage this spring.

The play centres on the ‘Riot Club’, ten male students part of an Elite Oxford dining society. A club meeting descends into night of debauchery and decadence, as the boys plan a takeover. The cast includes Simon Shepherd, Daniel Ryan, James Norton, Tom Mison, Joshua McGuire, Charlotte Lucas, Henry Lloyd Hughes, Kit Harrington, Harry Haddon-Paton, Richard Goulding, David Dawson, Jolyon Coy, Fiona Button and Leo Bill.

Writer Laura Wade previously received the Most Promising Playwright award from Critic’s Circle for Breathing Corpses in 2005. Other Hands and Colder Than Here are amongst her other credits. Posh will be directed by Lynsey Turner.

Also coming to The Royal Court theatre in London this summer is Sucker Punch, by Roy Williams. Set in the 80′s, former friends Leon and David take the boxing ring, to face up to their identity.

The Jerwood New Playwrights originally supported Roy Williams’s work, and previous plays at the Royal Court include Clubland, Lift Off and Fallout, later made into a film. He has also written Category B, performed at The Tricycle Theatre and Joe Guy for the Soho Theatre.
