The Tempest
Wednesday, March 24th, 2010‘The Tempest’ is categorised as one of Shakespeare’s problem plays. There are certainly a number of difficulties when staging it for a modern audience. Although it starts with a great storm which gives plenty of scope for designers and technicians to show off what can be achieved on the modern stage, the play then veers into what is possibly Shakespeare’s longest exposition. Prospero tells his daughter their history at great length.
The play is one of the shortest in the Bard’s canon but the magical Ariel and the lowly Caliban present a huge challenge for the actors playing them as they are creatures not of this world. However, with Sam Mendes directing renowned international company, The Bridge, the results are bound to be interesting and hopefully compelling. ‘The Tempest’ will run at the Old Vic from 12th June to 21st August and is in repertory with ‘As You Like It’. Theatre tickets are on sale now.
The cast includes Juliet Rylance who is currently warming up for her role by playing Desdemona in an off Broadway production of ‘Othello’. Her other previous credits include ‘The Winter’s Tale’ and ‘Troilus and Cressida’ at Shakespeare’s Globe. She has also appeared at the Donmar Warehouse theatre in London in ‘Hardball’.
