The Vaudeville Theatre
Friday, April 9th, 2010Theatre tickets are currently on sale for Noel Coward’s Private Lives, starring Kim Cattrall and Matthew Macfayden, and directed by Richard Eyre at The Vaudeville Theatre.
Private Lives is a relentlessly sharp and witty comedy about a divorced couple, both recently married and trying to embark on a new life. It is one of Noel Coward’s best known plays and repeatedly revived at London theatres.
The story centres on Elyot (MacFayden) and Amanda (Cattrall). Divorced form each other due to a destructively tempestuous relationship, both have re-married and are honeymooning in France with new spouses Sybil (Lisa Dillon) and Victor (Simon Paisley Day). When Elyot and Amanda discover each other on the balcony of their adjacent rooms, the fire of their attraction is re-ignited, and their uncontrollable passion cannot be tamed. The pair abandon their spurned other halves and run away together to a Parisian apartment to begin a new life. However, the bubbling resentment between Amanda and Elyot returns, and before long are losing the battle to quell their bickering – despite their best efforts.
Private Lives is a touchingly truthful and starkly funny depiction of the fine line between love and hate. Private Lives premiered at the Kings Theatre, Edinburgh in 1930, followed by a tour before premiering on the West End at the Phoenix Theatre in London. In 1931 it opened on Broadway at The Times Square Theatre Coward and Lawrence Olivier.
