Woman In Black

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

The long running thriller Woman in Black, which has been running at the Fortune Theatre in London since 1989, continues to scare and excite audiences in the West End. Theatre tickets are currently on sale.

The ghost story welcomes new cast members Michael Mears and Orlando Wells in the principle roles of this chilling tale, replacing Julian Forsythe and Christopher Naylor.

Wells plays young solicitor Arthur Kipps, who is employed to tie up the affairs of elderly widow Alice Drablow, recently deceased, at her secluded and desolate home Eel March House in the East Coast town of Crythin Gifford. After spotting a mysterious woman dressed in black at Mrs Drablow’s funeral, Kipps questions the local townsfolk as to her identity. However they are reluctant to disclose any information upon either Mrs Drablow or the mysterious woman, and Kipps is left alone at Eel Marsh House to discover the truth for himself. He is apparently not alone, and as he begins to reveal the facts, the woman in black begins to reveal herself.

Mears is a regular face on the London stage, and has recently appeared at the National Theatre in London in Nation and All’s Well That Ends Well. Other stage credits include The Comedy of Errors and Measure for Measure with the RSC.

Wells has previously been seen at the Donmar Warehouse in Pirandello’s Henry IV, as well as The History Boys and most recently Katrina, also in the West End.

The Woman in Black

‘The Woman in Black’ is in its 21st year and currently has theatre tickets available through until 18th December. It is without doubt, the scariest show in London’s West End theatre. Whilst there are some wonderful effects, which we will not spoil by describing them, many of the biggest chills come from the story and the manner in which it is told.

The play is adapted by Stephen Mallatratt from Susan Hill’s novel. A cast of just two actors bring the many characters to life. Arthur Kipps has a story he wish to tell and comes to a professional actor to help him be able to tell it in an engaging and interesting way.

Arthur Kipps is played by Julian Forsyth who has appeared regularly on our television screens. His credits include ‘A Touch of Frost’, ‘The Curse of Steptoe’ and ‘Diamond Geezer’. He also starred in ‘The Wizard of Oz’ at the Royal Festival Hall and ‘Gone With the Wind’ in London West End theatre.

The Actor is played by Christopher Naylor. He has been a regular at the Orange Tree Theatre where productions have included ‘Mary Goes First’, ‘Factors Unforeseen’ and ‘Mountain Hotel’. Other credits include ‘Blue/Orange’ at the New Victoria Theatre and ‘Hay Fever’ for director Peter Hall.

The Woman in Black

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

The winter seems to be a time when ghost stories, and the opportunity to be scared silly, seem to be a particularly attractive proposition. It is easy to see the pleasure in a good story, or as Shakespeare would put it, a winter’s tale. The thought of sitting in front of a roaring log fire, whilst safe from the outside world is guaranteed to make anyone feel good.

However, why people would want to go out to the theatre to be scared out of their wits is harder to understand. They clearly do, though, as ‘The Woman in Black’ is not only the scariest show in the West End, it is also one of the longest running. Sales of theatre tickets show no sign of slowing as the play continues its run at the Fortune Theatre, with theatre tickets already on sale.

The play is adapted from the novel by Susan Hill and calls on many of the ideas most familiar in ghost stories written by authors such as Charles Dickens and M R James. The play tells the story via two actors who become all of the characters in the horrific tale. The frights come from a mixture of theatrical effects, which we will not spoil by giving any more information about the production.

At Concierge Desk, we cater for all tastes, whether your preference is for musical theatre in London, comedy, classic drama or a good fright. We regularly update our great deals in cheap London theatre tickets. We are your first point of call when planning a trip to London.
