Show Overview / Review
La Bête was a huge critical success when it was last produced for the West End stage in 1992, winning an Olivier award for best comedy. The current revival promises something very special indeed, starring the magnificent Mark Rylance, Hyde Pierce (Niles is TV’s ‘Frasier’) and Joanna Lumley. It is directed by Matthew Warchus who has become one of stage’s biggest and highest acclaimed directors.
Set in the 17th Cetnury, ‘La Bete’ is a fabulous play written by American David Hirson and is about Elomire, a ‘high brow’ classical dramatist and Valere, a mere street clown and Elomire’s antithesis: where Elomire is dignified and cultured, Valere is nothing more than a ‘fop’, crude and frivolous. Elomire loves theatre above all else; Valere loves nothing more than himself!
Lumley plays the Princess whose whims effect the very lives of the two men; she becomes bored with Elomire’s high profile theatre troupe and has a desire to see more of Valere’s performances, infuriating Elomire and leaving both men rivals; pitted against each other, each trying to survive.
‘La Bete’ is a funny and clever play with rich and well rounded characters and with such stars, all with years of experience both on and off the stage, this latest production of ‘La Bete’ is certainly set to be a huge West End hit.
