David Tennant

David Tennant

Doctor Who star David Tennant is getting quite a reputation for dating his co-stars, and he’s at it again it seems. The Scottish actor took his recent co-star from the hit BBC 1 show out on the town to the Duke of York Theatre, to see his former co-star Catherine Tate in the stage production of Under the Blue Sky.

David’s most recent co-star, and new girlfriend, Georgia Moffatt plays the Doctor’s daughter in the show, but that has stopped David being romantically linked with 23-year-old actress. The two have reportedly been dating for the past two months.

After leaving the Duke of York Theatre, David and Georgia were snapped by the press jumping into a waiting taxi.

If reports are true, Georgia is the fourth Doctor Who co-star that he has been romantically involved with.

David recently received great reviews himself for his role in Hamlet.

Georgia seems un-phased by the fact that David has dated many other of his ‘companions’ on the TV show:

David is dishy, isn’t he?

He’s not only a good-looking but he is such a lovely, sweet guy.

Catherine Tate speaks about her theatre work

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

Catherine TateTV funny girl Catherine Tate may be better known for her comedy series ‘The Catherine Tate Show’ and her collection of catchphrase rich characters, plus her work on Doctor Who with David Tennant, but she’s also an experienced theatre actress.

Born Catherine Ford (she changed her name to Tate when she applied for her Equity card), she is currently appearing in ‘Under the Blue Sky’ at the Duke of York Theatre in the West End, which runs until September 20th.

Despite her grounding in TV and comedy, she isn’t a newcomer to theatre at all. her first introduction to the boards was in the Royal Shakespeare Company playing the role of Smeraldina in ‘A Servant to Two Masters’. After that she appeared alongside David Schwimmer, the star of Friends, in ‘Some Girls’ in 2005.

Catherine spoke about her time in the RSC at one of their ‘Shakespeare and Me’ talks last year.

It’s got to strike a chord with us. We can’t write Shakespeare off, but wearing bells on knees isn’t going to work.

She also mentioned how she’d impersonated Sir Ian McKellen at an audition for her drama school when she was 17. After graduating she landed a role in ‘The Way of the World’ in the National Theatre. She said that she wasn’t really expected to progress much further in her theatre roles however:

You go in at a low level, you come out as you go in. There’s a hierarchy that’s impossible to climb.

After which Catherine went into stand up and forged out a successful career in comedy.

It was such a relief to take some control back.

David Eldridge, the playwright of Under the Blue Sky, is glad that Catherine came back to theatre though, and believes that her comedy has helped her stage performances.

The comedy was something she did for herself, but she never considered herself anything other than an actor and always had an interest in doing plays. I saw her in a reading at the Donmar and she was fantastic in it, so when they first talked to me about sending Catherine Tate my play, I was delighted. She’s very well cast and, really for her, this is a coming home more than a departure.

Break a leg Catherine

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

Would you believe it, but Catherine Tate has taken a tumble during rehearsals for her latest West End play and has twisted her ankle. She took the tumble earlier this week and had to perform on Wednesday night using crutches.

Catherine is appearing in the play ‘Under the Blue Sky’ in London’s ‘The Duke of York’ theatre. Better known for her comedy and her stint on BBC 1’s Doctor Who, Catherine stated earlier this week how she believed theatre tickets should be made cheaper to ensure that more people had access to the arts.

A spokeswoman for the play ‘Under the Blue Sky’ stated that Catherine Tate wouldn’t be held down by her accident:

She twisted her ankle in rehearsal but she should be alright pretty soon.

The play, ‘Under the Blue Sky’ is scheduled to run up until September 20th 2008.

Show Overview

‘Under the Blue Sky’ was first staged at the Royal Court in 2000. It is a play that looks at the frailty of relationships and the complications when all parties concerned work together. London born playwright, David Elrdidge explores the height of passion along with unrequited love and the journey is mostly humorous but also touching.

The play is about six teachers and their staff room antics and its’ revival at the Duke of York theatre has generated a great deal of interest, not least of all due to the presence of Catherine Tate. Tate whose final scenes in Doctor Who have only recently been shown on television is no stranger to live theatre and she was trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama, so serious acting from her is something we are slowly learning to expect. Move over Lauren!

In Under the Blue Sky, Tate plays Michelle who succumbs to the advances of Nick who has only recently dumped Helen. Michelle meanwhile attempts to conquer virgin Graham. The final scene focuses on two older teachers who try to assess the complications of their having an affair.

Teaching has always been deemed such a respectable profession but recent programmes about the staff room antics and this enlightening play, would suggest teaching is an excuse to liven up your sex life!

Francesca Annis (Anne) and Lisa Dillon (Helen) were both in BBC’s Elizabeth Gaskell adaptation ‘Cranford’, whilst Chris O’Dowd (Nick) found his own piece of TV success as Roy in Channel 4′s ‘The IT Crowd’. Dominic Rowan (Graham) has Donmar, National and RSC credits to his name, while Nigel Lindsay has recently played Pinter and O’Dets at the Almeida and starred in the Donmar’s West End production of ‘Guys and Dolls’.

Previews for this play begin 16th July and opening night is 25th July.
