Waiting For Godot
Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010When a production of Samuel Beckett’s ‘Waiting For Godot’ was mooted, ahead of its staging at the Theatre Royal Haymarket last year, a lot of people including senior members of the theatre’s management thought it was a very bad idea. The play is absurd and has often been criticised as being impenetrable so it is understandable that, whoever was cast, many thought it would be a difficult show to sell. In fact, they were wrong. The show sold out of theatre tickets and has been revived this year for an eleven week run through until 27th March, with theatre tickets still available.
Ian McKellen and Ronald Pickup reprise their roles. However Roger Rees has taken over from Patrick Stewart and Matthew Kelly replaces Simon Callow.
Roger Rees has worked with McKellen many times before, which is useful as the characters they both play know each other like a very old married couple. Rees has a tremendous list of credits, including the roles of Nicholas Nickleby and Hamlet for the Royal Shakespeare Company and regular television appearances in ‘The West Wing’, ‘Gray’s Anatomy’ and ‘Cheers’. His films include ‘Robin Hood: Men In Tights’, ‘The Scorpion King’ and ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’.
Matthew Kelly has been busy on stage having recently played in ‘Comedians’ at the Lyric Hammersmith theatre in London and ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’ in the West End.
