Performances of War Horse have attained a 90% capacity, with 400,000 attendances during the last financial year. The National Theatre production sales altogether increased in 2009/2010 by almost 50%.  War Horse is set during World War 1 and has become the biggest-selling production ever at the New London Theatre, Drury Lane. It is a thrilling and spectacular production based on the celebrated novel by Michael Morpurgo, with actors working with life sized puppets by the internationally renowned Handspring Puppet Company. Audiences are taken on an unforgettable journey through history, leading them on an emotionally-charged journey. Truly a production that spans the generations and will enchant all who see it.

It has taken £13.2 million at the box office, making up 20% of the National Theatres overall income. The Chairman of the National, Hayden Phillips, told The Stage ”In the last year, I think I can fairly say that the theatre has achieved success with high artistic quality and a wide range”.

War Horse

Sunday, June 13th, 2010

The critically acclaimed War Horse has extended its run at the New London Theatre by 8 months, and theatre tickets for the show are now on sale until 22 October 2011.

War Horse originated at the National Theatre on the Olivier stage in October 2007. It finished its first run in Feb 2008 before returning to the Olivier for a second run in September, then transferring to the New London Theatre in the West End in April 2009. War Horse will also be transferring to Broadway in March 2011, where it will play at the Vivien Beaumont Theatre in London.

The tear-jerking production is based on Michael Morpurgo’s original novel, which has been adapted for the stage by Nick Stafford. The show, which uses puppetry to create life size horses and animals alongside real actors, has received wide critical acclaim, and is billed as “One of the most powerfully moving and imaginative productions of the year, whatever age you happen to be” (Daily Telegraph).

Joey, a horse given to and raised by young Albert, is sold to the Calvary after the outbreak of World War one. Joey embarks on the odyssey of war, fighting on the sides of both the English and the Germans before finding himself in no man’s land, and Albert takes on a perilous journey to find Joey and bring him back home.

The play is directed by Tom Morris and Marianne Elliot.

Warhorse Extends

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

The multi award winning production of Warhorse, staged by The National Theatre, has extended its run thanks to ongoing theatre ticket sales. The show continues to sell out at Central London’s New London Theatre, delighting audiences of all ages with the heart wrenching tale of a horse drafted to fight in battle during World War One.

Warhorse premiered at The South Bank theatre in London back in October 2007, to a phenomenal response from audiences and critics. The production is co-directed by National Theatre resident director Marianne Elliot, and Tom Morris. With movement from Tom Sedgwick, Warhorse incorporates stunning puppetry to recreate the life of a horse from birth through to his journey for survival in the war. Music is by Adrian Sutton, lighting from Paule Constable and Rae Smith has designed the show.

Taken from the 1982 children’s book by Michael Morpurgo, Nick Stafford’s stage adaptation tells the story of Joey, a horse given to and trained by his loving friend and owner Albert, before being sold to the Calvary to fight in the Great War. Joey is shipped to France to fight, but Albert – who is too young to enlist – follows him on a perilous journey, determined to bring Joey home.

The play is also transferring to Broadway next year, and is set to play at The Lincoln Centre Theatre and The Vivian Beaumont Theatre in New York. Booking dates and casting are soon to be announced.

War Horse

The National Theatre’s production ‘War Horse’ continues in the West End at the New London Theatre. It seems to be as popular as ever and has just been nominated for an Olivier Award. Theatre tickets for this magical show are currently on sale for performances through until 12th February 2011.

The play is based on Michael Morpurgo’s novel for young people. It tells the story of Joey, a horse who is conscripted into the war effort in the First World War. He is shipped to mainland Europe and seems set to be another victim of the horrific bloodshed.

What makes this production especially memorable is the fantastic puppetry by Handspring Puppet Company. Their puppets of horses are fantastic and really need to be seen to be believed. The work of the puppeteers is wonderful. The effects involving tanks are also worth the admission price alone.

The story is something of a tear jerker and you would be well advised to stock up on tissues before you enter the theatre.

The cast currently includes Colin Mace. His previous stage productions include ‘The Lieutenant of Inishmore’, Antony and Cleopatra’ and ‘Volpone’ for the Royal Shakespeare Company ‘Hamlet’ for the Almeida and ‘Pravda’ for the Chichester Festival Theatre.
