West Side Story is Fifty Years old this week, and on Thursday night it made a triumphant return to London’s theatre scene for it’s birthday performance. It was staged at Sadler’s Wells, where it will be performed until 31st August before embarking a nationwide tour.

West Side Story is set in New York’s gangland culture and is based loosely on William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. It features the battle between the Jets and the Sharks as two of their number fall in love.

Classic songs from the production include ‘Somewhere’, ‘I Feel Pretty’ and ‘America’. The theatre production originally opened in Broadway before also becoming a major Hollywood movie.

In a star-studded audience for the opening night of West Side Story’s 50th birthday performance was Jodie Prenger, who won the role of Nancy in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “I’d Do Anything” earlier this year.

West Side Story is the famous musical production inspired by Shakespeare’s classic Romeo and Juliet written for Broadway theatre in 1957 by Arthur Laurent.

Set in the Manhattan district of New York in the ‘Teddy Boy’ age of the 1950′s, the classic musical follows two rival gangs of different ethnic origins, ‘The Jets’ (native to Manhattan) and the Puerto Rican ‘Sharks’. The gangs battle constantly for control of the neighborhood, with street fights and weapons never far away.

Amidst the violent world of the gang warfare, love begins to blossom when Jets gang member, Tony meets Maria, the sister of the Sharks gang leader at a dance. The unlikely and forbidden relationship inevitably causes further friction and trouble between the two groups until it reaches boiling point…

With music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, West Side Story is packed full of songs that have become instantly recognisable over the years such as “Maria”, “I Feel Pretty”, “America,” “Tonight”, “Somewhere,” and “Jet Song”.

West Side Story was made into a film in 1961, winning no less than 10 Academy Awards, and the Sadlers Wells Theatre production marks the 50th anniversary of the musical’s debut in London theatre.
