The Wizard of Oz

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

The winner of the BBC television show Over The Rainbow, Danielle Hope, gets ready for her stage debut in Andrew Lloyd Webbers The Wizard of Oz at the Palladium in February 2011. Theatre tickets are now on sale.

Also cast from the show is “Dangerous Dave”, the Mini Schnauzer who will play the role of Toto.

The Wizard of Oz musical is a “totally reconceived” stage version by Lloyd-Webber, taken from the legendary 1939 Hollywood film, in which Judy Garland played the principle role.

The story centres on Dorothy Gale, a 12 year-old orphan living in Kansas with her Aunt Em and her dog Toto. When Toto bites the horrible Miss Almira Gulch she demands to have him put down, however he escapes. Dorothy runs away with Toto and encounters a mysterious fortune teller, who tells her to return to the house immediately. Just as she does the house is struck by a tornado, so she shelters inside, where she is knocked unconscious during the chaos.

When Dorothy was she is in a different world. Glinda, The Good Witch of The North arrives, and tells Dorothy that her house has fallen upon the Wicked Witch of the East, much to the joy of the inhabitant munchkins. With the Wicked Witch of the West seeking revenge, Dorothy follows the yellowbrick road to find the Wizard of Oz, and on the way encounters a Scarecrow, the Tin Man and a Cowardly Lion.
