Two international comedies ‘The Roman Bath’ and ‘The Titanic Orchestra’ will play in repertory at the Arcola Theatre in London from 28th April until 15th May. theatre tickets are available for both shows now. They are directed by Russell Bolam who has built quite a reputation for himself. Previous productions include the wonderful ‘Captain Oates’ Left Sock’ at the Finborough theatre in London and ‘Tiny Bones’ and ‘Lark Ascending’ at Theatre 503.

You may not have heard of Stanislev Stratiev, but he is one of Bulgaria’s foremost comic writers. His play ‘The Roman Bath’ is adapted by Justin Butcher. The highly satirical play sees the hapless Ivan return from his holiday to discover his house has virtually been demolished. An artefact of great value has been unearthed from beneath his floorboards resulting in everybody wanting a piece of the action.

‘The Titanic Orchestra’ is also by a Bulgarian playwright, Hristo Boytchev, whose earlier play ‘The Colonel Bird’ won the British Council’s International Playwriting Award for Best Play 1997. This play tells the story of four tramps on a railway platform who have a man thrown from a train into their midst. He claims to be the great Harry Houdini and promises to involve the tramps in the greatest escape the world has ever seen.

Here at Concierge Desk, whether your taste is for international theatre, musicals or Shakespeare, we have the best deals in cheap London theatre tickets.
Mrs Warren’s Profession is a Play

Show Overview

From 16th March, see Felicity Kendall on stage at the Comedy Theatre; one of Britain’s best loved actresses known particularly for her role in the long running comedy ‘The Good Life’, Ms Kendall is no stranger to the London stage.

‘Mrs Warren’s Profession’ is one of Shaw’s most provocative plays about mother-daughter relationships. Set amidst the hypocrisy of Victorian society, Shaw exposes the reality of what went on behind the exclusive closed doors of the upper classes.

Vivie has been bought up by her mother without knowing much about what her mother does or who she really is. She has been bought up with the strict Victorian morales that defined the times and is quite the distinguished lady with a Cambridge education and a very generous allowance from her mother. But what exactly does her mother do to earn the money?

Is it possible her mother has joined one of the oldest professions to fund their very proper lives and her education? And how can she then reconcile her respectability with her own mother’s dubious money making ways?

‘Mrs Warren’s Profession’ was written by Shaw in 1893 and was an attempt to highlight that prostitution exists because women generally were overworked and underpaid and vastly undervalued. Due to its’ theme and frank discussion, it was originally banned from the stage by Lord Chamberlain but it subsequently became a hugely popular play, widely acclaimed for its’ insight.

‘Enron’ is playing at the Noel Coward Theatre in London with theatre tickets available up until the 8th May.

The director Rupert Goold cannot seem to do anything wrong and it is easy to see why he is so highly rated when watching this show. Credit must go to Lucy Prebble for an amazing script which explains the various accounting concepts at the heart of Enron’s fraud in laymen’s terms, whilst being consistently entertaining. It is hard to believe that this is only her second play, but serves as a tribute to the Royal Court theatre in London for the way it has nurtured her since staging her first play ‘The Sugar Syndrome’ in 2003.

Goold runs with that great writing and ensures that the acting is precise and does not fall victim to large production numbers and grand staging. In fact that staging and the flights of imagination which have gone into the show enhance rather than detract. There are musical interludes and some wonderfully comic throwaway creations. The most memorable, and probably most utilised, of these are the raptors (yes, that’s right, the dinosaurs featured in ‘Jurassic Park’).

The acting is excellent from the ensemble cast. Particular praise goes to Samuel West who plays Jeffrey Skilling, the man at the heart of the Enron scandal and the person who is ultimately punished for it.

At Concierge Desk, we bring you great deals in cheap London theatre tickets and endeavour to keep you up to date on which are the very best shows to see.

The Real Thing is a Play

Show Overview

Tom Stoppard’s 1982 play is about Henry, a successful playwright who is married to Charlotte, also his leading lady in a play he has written about adultery in which she stars with her friend Max.

As ‘The Real Thing’ begins, Stoppard tricks the audience into thinking the first scene is real but actually this is a play within a play as Stoppard explores honesty amongst friends and lovers.

Charlotte dislikes the play as she feels there is not much to the female character and little for her to say whereas Max’s character seems to be Henry’s ‘voice’.

Reality within the play focuses on Henry and his relationship with Annie who is married to Max. Annie is an activist preoccupied with trying to free Brodie, a Scottish soldier imprisoned for burning a memorial wreath. Henry mocks Annie’s ideology but later we discover this too is ‘unreal’ as Henry and Annie are having an affair. Max discovers his wife’s infidelity and she leaves him for Henry.

Henry’s own ideology about love threaten to overcome him as he has to compromise his art in order to pay his wife’s alimony. He discovers that Charlotte had numerous affairs whilst they were married which leads him to be suspicious of Annie. Back at their apartment whilst she is away acting, he looks for evidence of an affair and then when Annie returns, he confronts her. This seen mirrors the first scene in which Charlotte played the wife of Max but Annie has much more to say to Henry that he gave Charlotte to say in the play. She admits to having an affair with her co star but refuses to give him or Henry up.

Henry painfully accepts Annie’s decision but then newly released Brodie appears, causing yet more strain and confusion.

‘The Real Thing’ is a fast paced play and a great evenings entertainment made all the better by the casting of the fabulous Toby Stephens who is instantly recognisable as Bond villain Gustav Graves in ‘Die Another Day’.

Arthur Schnitzler’s most famous play ‘La Ronde’ still receives regular revivals and is constantly adapted and updated. However, you could be excused for not being able to name any of his other works. The Young Vic is looking to change that with its production of his ‘Liebelei’, called ‘Sweet Nothings’ in a new version by David Harrower. The director is Luc Bondy and the show will run from 1st March to 10th April. theatre tickets for this play are already available.

The cast includes Kate Burdette. She has been seen on our television screens in ‘Capturing Mary’ and at our cinemas in ‘The Duchess’. Previous stage credits include ‘Eyes Catch Fire’ at the Finborough theatre in London and ‘The Man Outside’ at the Theatre Royal Haymarket.

Burdette is joined by Andrew Wincott who is perhaps best known for playing Adam Macy in the radio institution ‘The Archers’. His television includes ‘Thief Takers’ and ‘New Tricks’. Recent stage work includes ‘Lloyd George Knew My Father’ at the Theatre Royal in Bath.

Also in the cast is Natalie Dormer. This young actress played Anne Boelyn in the prestigious television series ‘The Tudors’ and was seen on cinemas screens in the film version of ‘Casanova’.

There’s nothing better than some wonderful theatre, especially when you get free theatre tickets. Here’s something even better. You don’t even have to book in advance; just turn up on the day. The venue is the Scoop, which is by the River Thames just down from London Bridge. This open air venue has played host to free professional shows throughout the summer for several years. In 2010, things kick off early with a marathon, or should that be Bardathon over three days.

April 23rd is St George’s Day, and also William Shakespeare’s Birthday. As it falls on a Friday this year, the celebrations are going to stretch through the weekend. You will be able to see rehearsed readings of twelve of Shakespeare’s plays.

Each day the first show starts at 10.00am and then there is one every three hours. On Friday 23rd April, it will be the Roman plays. That is ‘Coriolanus’, Julius Caesar’, Antony and Cleopatra’ and ‘Titus Andronicus’.

The history plays will then be presented on the 24th and 25th. On the Saturday ‘Richard II’ will be followed by both parts of Henry IV and ‘Henry V’. The Sunday sees the weekend rounded off in fine style with the three parts of Henry VI and the crookback himself ‘Richard III’ concluding the celebration.

There will be some well known faces from the world of London theatre so it’s worth popping along, even if you don’t stay for the whole 36 hours. At Concierge Desk, we love free theatre tickets and keeping you informed about special events, including those involving cheap London theatre tickets.
