The Menier Chocolate factory has succeeded in producing another hit London show. The revival of ‘A Little Night Music’ by Stephen Sondheim will now be running for an additional six weeks in the West End. It runs at the Garrick Theatre until the 5th of September. There is even talk that this show, which first hit Broadway in 1973, will be transferring there after its West End run.

This particular production started its life at the 150 seat Menier where it sold out. It then transferred to the Garrick where it officially opened on the 7th of April.

The show is based on Ingmar Bergman’s 1955 film and includes numbers such as ‘Send in the Clowns’ which won a Grammy.

The cast includes Alexander Hanson, Hannah Waddingham, Jessie Buckley, Maureen Lipman, Gabriel Vick, Charlotte Page and Kelly Price.

Another hit musical production which started life at the Menier Chocolate Factory is Terry Johnson’s ‘La Cage Aux Folles’ which is playing at the Playhouse Theatre and currently stars Roger Allam and Philip Quast.

The Menier has built a remarkable reputation in a short time. Previous transfers have included ‘Little Shop of Horrors’, ‘Dealer’s Choice’, ‘Fully Committed’ and ‘Sunday in the Park with George’.

More Sondheim for the West End

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Stephen Sondheim’s 1973 musical ‘A Little Night Music’ is to transfer to the Garrick Theatre from the 28th of March. It will only run, initially, for a limited season until the 25th July. The revival was produced by the Menier Chocolate Factory under Trevor Nunn’s direction. It finishes its run at the Chocolate Factory on the 8th March and has already sold all the theatre tickets available.

It will join another Menier musical running in the West End. ‘La Cage Aux Folles’ continues its run at the Playhouse Theatre where Graham Norton continues to attract the crowds. In fact, ‘A Little Night Music’ will be the seventh Menier show to transfer to the West End in the last five years. The most successful of the previous transfers was another Sondheim show, ‘Sunday in the Park with George’ which went on to have a Broadway transfer.

The current show is inspired by the Swedish director Ingmar Bergman’s 1955 film. It is largely written in waltz time and concerns the complicated love lives of various Swedish couples at the start of the twentieth century. Perhaps the best known song in the show is ‘Send in the Clowns’ which won a Grammy Award.

The cast includes Maureen Lipman, Hannah Waddingham and Alexander Hanson, and A Little Night Music tickets are available with Concierge Desk London.

Show Type

A Little Night Music is a Musical

Show Overview

The Menier Chocolate Factory’s production of Stephen Sondheim’s and Hugh Wheeler’s ‘A Little Night Music’ is coming to the Garrick Theatre for a limited period only. Based on Ingmar Bergman’s ‘Smiles of a Summer Night’, ‘A Little Night Music’ is set in the 19th Century Sweden and is a romantic, warm and funny tale of elegant actress Desiree Armfeldt and the intrigue of passion and complex affairs that surround her.

This lively and lovely production directed by the superb Trevor Nunn, features ‘Send in the Clowns’ amongst some other fantastic Sondheim music.

The excellent cast is led by Jessie Buckley, the fabulous Irish singer who lost out to Jodie Pringer in last year’s search for a ‘Nancy’ in BBC’s ‘I’d Do Anything’. Kaisa Hammarlund, Alexander Hanson (last seen in ‘The Sound of Music’) Maureen Lipman, Kelly Price, Alistair Robins, Gabriel Vick and Hannah Waddingham.

This is a musical that arrives in the West End without the whirl of publicity that surrounds many high budget shows but it is worth seeing all the same. The Menier Chocolate Factory are consistent in turning out ‘must see’ shows and ‘A Little Night Music’ is no exception. It is an exquisite production with some really show stopping performances and Concierge Desk highly recommend securing your ticket.

A Little Night Music

A Little Night Music’ by Stephen Sondheim premiered on Broadway in 1973. It then opened in London at the Adelphi Theatre in 1975. Since then there have been two major revivals at the Piccadilly Theatre in 1989 and then at the National Theatre in 1995.

Trevor Nunn will now direct the show for the Menier Chocolate Factory with previews commencing on 22 November.

The musical was inspired by an Ingmar Bergman film and is written largely in waltz time. Perhaps the most famous number in the show is ‘Send in the Clowns’. The story tells the tale of a number of Swedish couples and their complicated love lives at the turn of the 20th century.

The cast will include Hannah Waddingham, who created the role of the Lady in the Lake in the London production of ‘Spamalot’. She will play the part of Desiree.

Maureen Lipman plays Mme Armfeldt. Her previous credits include ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’, ‘Peggy For You’ and the National Theatre’s production of ‘Oklahoma’ which was also directed by Trevor Nunn.
Jessie Buckley who was the runner-up in the recent TV series, ‘I’d Do Anything’ plays Anne. Alexander Hanson who was in the 1989 production of the show and recently appeared in the ill-fated ‘Marguerite’, plays Fredrik.

The production promises to ensure that ‘A Little Night Music’ will still be a great London show fourth time around.
