Based on Sebastian Faulkes’ 1993 book of the same name, ‘Birdsong’ is a dramatic play that tells the tragic story of Stephen and his journey through a torrid love affair and into the horror of the first world war.

Directed by Trevor Nunn who has four Laurence Olivier awards under his belt, this production is sure to be an emotional ride for audience members as the subject matter is at times harrowing, sad and passionate. It is directed with a realism that will leave you feeling drained but with the overpowering joy of seeing something truly fantastic on stage.

Stephen finds himself embroiled in a passionate affair with Isabelle, a married woman; it is a relationship that changes them both forever. Years later, Stephen returns to the same part of France where Isabelle lives with her husband, only this time he is a soldier at the Battle of the Somme, the bloodiest battle in British military history. Faced with the horror of battle and with his men dying around him, Stephen turns once again to Isabelle’s love in order to survive.

‘Birdsong’ is a hugely powerful and riveting play and stars Ben Barnes, who has starred ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ as Prince Caspian.
