Cat On A Hot Tin Roof

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

2010 looks set to be a good year for admirers of Tennessee Williams. The Finborough Theatre in London has already announced Phil Willmott’s production of the rarely performed ‘The Notebook of Trigorin’ and ‘Cat On A Hot Tin Roof’ is currently enjoying its run at the Novello Theatre with theatre tickets available for performances until 10th April.

The play is set in Mississippi and, as with many of Williams’ works seems to swelter in the heat of a never ending summer. It tells the story of Big Daddy, a wealthy cotton planter, and his dysfunctional family.

The production has already been a hit on Broadway and James Earl Jones and Phylicia Rashad have travelled across the Atlantic to reprise their roles. They have been joined by some excellent British actors.

Adrian Lester is probably best known for his television work in series such as ‘Bonekickers’ and ‘Afterlife’ and, of course, his role as lovable rogue Mickey in the BBC show ‘Hustle’. His films include ‘Born Romantic’, ‘Spiderman 3’ and Kenneth Branagh’s ‘As You Like It’. He also has some heavyweight stage credits including the role of Hamlet for Peter Brook and the title role in ‘Henry V’ at the National Theatre in London.

This production is unique in that it is the first all black production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof to be produced in a theatre in London.  Following its success on Broadway this play features Earl Jones when it first opened last year.  Directed by Debbie Allen this play is sure to create a hit at the Novella theatre in London.

This powerful and dramatic play centres on a southern family birthday celebration set in Tennessee. Big Daddy played by James Earl Jones unaware that he is dying commands the show and as the festiveness progresses tensions mount and relationships alter as family secrets are revealed.

Comedian Richard Blackwood, Sanaa Lathan, Adrian Lester, Phylicia Rashad and James Earl Jones complete the core cast of this iconic theatre production.  They are joined by well known names such as Derek Griffiths, Peter de Jersey, Joseph Mydell, Nina Sosanya, Guy Burgess, Claudia Cadette, Susan Lawson-Reynolds and Yvonne Gidden.

Show Overview

‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’ was made into a memorable film in 1958 staring Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor. Prior to that, it premiered on Broadway in 1955 and since then has had numerous revivals both on the professional and amateur circuit.

This Tennessee Williams play is set on a Missisippi Estate where a birthday party has been hosted for Big Daddy who is unaware that he is dying of cancer because his children have kept the secret from him. The bickering ensues as each child struggles to maintain any dignity in their preoccupation with securing a part of the Estate and we meet Maggie (the Cat) who herself married into the wealthy family in order to escape a poverty stricken life. However, she finds herself at the abusive hands of her alcoholic husband Brick and as the tension mounts and their stormy relationship comes to a shocking climax, secrets are discovered.

Don’t miss out on this wonderful Tennessee play. It is fraught with tension and passion, anxiety, fear and love and the wonderful cast of this West End production are sure to deliver the punches.

The Director Debbie Allen was once known and loved for playing the dance teacher in the original TV series of ‘Fame’. She took this production of ‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’ to Broadway and received high acclaim. The cast were also part of the original Broadway production, including James Earl Jones, a wonderful actor with a deep resonating voice.

‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’ is a timeless play that continues to draw in the audiences and I cannot recommend enough going to see this superb all black production.
