Anne Boleyn

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

The full cast has now been announced for Howard Brenton’s Anne Boleyn playing at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre this summer. The show, which will be the world premiere of this new play, opens on 24 July for previews and runs until 21 August 2010. Theatre tickets are on sale now.

Miranda Raison was previously announced in the title role, and will now be joined by Anthony Howell playing King Henry VIII, and James Garnon as King James I. Also appearing are John Cummins, Michael Bertenshaw, Sam Cox, Ben Deery, Naomi Cranston, Mary Doherty, Will Featherstone, John Dougall, Colin Hurley, Peter Hamilton Dyer, Amanda Lawrence and Dickon Tyrell. John Dove will direct the show, which is designed by Michael Taylor.

Anne Boleyn was Henry VIII’s second wife, a passionate woman in love with both the King and politics. Howard Brenton has said that he “sets out to challenge the traditional assumptions of Anne Boleyn as a pawn manipulated by an ambitious father or as a sexually licentious predator, even a witch. Here, Brenton puts a very different Anne on the Globe stage – a witty and confident woman with controversial religious ideals, taking on the vicious world of Tudor politics.”

Currently showing is Henry IV Part One, closely followed by Henry IV Part Two opening on 3 July. The plays form part of the Kings And Rogues season at the Globe, which will also include the Merry Wives of Windsor and new play Bedlam by Nell Leyshon.

Leicester Square Theatre

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

The Leicester Square Theatre is well known in the West End for its eclectic mix of performances, ranging from comedy to dramas and musicals. One of the latest productions to hit the stage is a new musical by Mike Stock, written especially for children and premiering this summer. Theatre tickets are on sale now.

Eight times Ivor Novello award winner Mike Stock is also one third of Stock Aitkin Waterman, the songwriting partnership. This new musical, The Go! Go! Go! Show, is aimed at a junior audience and will be performed by Stock’s own company The Show 4 Kids as their debut production. The Show 4 Kids is a company that aims to “fill a gap in the market for high quality children’s entertainment”.

Carole Todd, whose previous directorial credits include Dreamboats and Petticoats, will direct the show, with book by Dean Wilkinson and music by Stock and Steve Crosby. Paul Domain of the BBC’s So You Think You Can Dance fame has choreographed the show.

Mike Stock, Matt Aitkin and Pete Waterman were at the height of their careers in the 1980s, writing for the likes of Paul McCartney, Kylie Minogue, Rick Astley and Jason Donavan. They were responsible for the sale of over 40 million records.

Co-writer and producer Steve Crosby commented “With The Go! Go! Go! Show, we’re getting back to the great days of Steps, offering a ticket to a pop show that all the family can enjoy.”

Mamma Mia!

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Hit ABBA musical Mamma Mia! continues its success on the West End, with theatre tickets flourishing as ever. New to the cast from 14th June is Harriet Thorpe, a regular face on the West End, taking over the role of the glamorous Tanya.

Thorpe has spent the last two years performing the role of Madame Morrible in top selling show Wicked. Prior to this she has been seen in fellow West End musicals Les Miserables and Cabaret. Roles in Absolutely Fabulous and The Brittas Empire have also made her a familiar face on screen.

Mamma Mia! is inspired by the chart topping Swedish group ABBA, and features a score taken entirely from their soundtrack, and composed by former members Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson. The story centres on Donna, a former singer living in the Greek Islands with her daughter Sophie, who is soon to be married. Sophie’s father is absent; however she is desperate to have him give her away on her wedding day, so invites three of her mother’s former lovers to the island in the hope of discovering him. When Donna realises what has happened her heart is soon reawakened.

Thorpe replaces Jane Gurnett as the sophisticated, man-hungry Tanya, alongside cast members Linzi Hately (Donna) and Jessie May (Sophie). Also in the cast are Christopher Hollis, Paul Ryan, Catherine Russell and Norman Bowman.

The Soho Theatre

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti brings her latest controversial production Behud (Beyond Belief) to The Soho Theatre in London, in response to the sensation and uproar regarding her previous production Behzti – cancelled during its run in Birmingham following vehement protests and demonstrations. Theatre tickets are on sale now.

Artistic Director of the Soho Theatre Lisa Goldman directs Behud (Beyond Belief), which presents an artist struggling against politicians, protesters and the theatre establishment as she struggles to be heard amidst the noise.

Also coming to The Soho Theatre in London this summer is the critically acclaimed La Boheme from OperaUpClose, a new translation and “madly brilliant re-imagining” from Robert Norton-Hale.

From 1830s Bohemian Paris, OperaUpClose’s La Boheme transports Puccini’s inspiring opera to the present day streets of Soho. Featuring a young cast, this “honest, perceptive, unpretentious and intelligent” production was conceived to present an emotionally engaging, charming, funny, visceral performance that makes La Boheme as accessible to a modern day audience as it was in 1986.

Mimi is living and working as a cleaner in England after moving from her home in Romania. Living in a bed-sit in North London, she encounters a group of boys living a Bohemian lifestyle – artistic, indulgent and utterly carefree. However when she and Rodolfo fall in love, their lifestyle meets complexity.

La Boheme is directed by Robert Norton-Hale, with Andrew Charity (Kiss Of The Spiderwoman, Cosi Fan Tutti, Pierrot Lunaire) on board as musical director.
