The Railway Children

Monday, July 26th, 2010

The well-loved tale The Railway Children by E. Nesbit is brought to London by York Theatre Royal in an event that will transform Waterloo’s disused Eurotunnel terminal into a theatrical space. Theatre tickets are on sale now.

The audience will be placed under glass arches on Platform 24, on either side of the railway track, where the Stirling Single locomotive will stand at the centre of the site-specific show. The former Eurotunnel terminal will be transformed into exhibitions, bars and cafes in honour of the performance, which supports the Railway Children Charity for homeless children.

Marshall Lancaster, playing station master Mr Perks, has said that “the audience sit on high platforms as if they’re waiting for trains. They get the whole Victorian experience. They get their tickets stamped when they come in, there’s luggage everywhere. They should expect a high-paced, full Victorian experience. The way they’re building the set, they’ve got real trains coming in, it’s really quite something.”

Lancaster went on to say that “we are always upstaged by the steam trains, so we don’t worry about it! It is amazing; people just look forward to it arriving. There’s a steam effect and sound. Obviously it can’t be blazing or we’d all be on fire in the theatre. To think that the girl who plays Bobby – Sarah Quintrell – she’s got to stand in front of it and wave a petticoat as it stops! Very exciting.”

The Railway Children runs from July until September.

The Menier Chocolate Factory is one of the most successful off West End theatres in London, with shows continuing to transfer to the West End following sell out productions and outstanding reviews. The latest musical to grace the Chocolate factory stage is Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Aspects of Love, directed by Trevor Nunn. The show opens for previews on 7th July and theatre tickets are on sale now.

Michael Arden and Katherine Kingsley were previously announced in the leading roles of Alex Dillingham and Rose Vibert. The pair will now be joined by Rosalie Craig (Giuletta), Dave Willetts (George), Martin Ellis (Marcel) and Rebecca Brewer (Jenny). Also appearing are Louise Lydell, Jill Armour, Ian McLarnon, Savannah Stevenson, David Roberts, Rebecca Trehearne and Dominic Tighe.

Set against a backdrop 1940s France and Italy, young student Alex Dillingham embarks on a passionate love affair with Rose Vibert, an alluring actress. Over three generations, six people brought together learn that love changes everything.

David Willets has recently been seen playing Max in Sunset Boulevard on the West End. Rosalie Craig performed at the Jermyn Street Theatre in Anyone Can Whistle.

Whatsonstage.com award winner Martin Ellis was noted for his performance as Nicely Nicely in Guys And Dolls, directed by Michael Grandage.

This is the first revival of aspects of Love since 1989, when it premiered at the Prince of Wale’s Theatre in the West end – also directed by Nunn.

London Coliseum

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

For the ultimate operatic experience, the London Coliseum is the city’s highly renowned venue for spell bounding Opera. Currently running at the central London location is Idomeneo, the first mature masterpiece by Mozart. Theatre tickets for Idomeneo at the London Coliseum are on sale now.

Idomeneo is conducted by English National Opera’s Edward Gardner, winner of the Laurence Olivier award for Outstanding Achievement in Opera.

Set in Crete in around 1200 BC, the opera is set amongst the backdrop of the Trojan War. Idomeneo has been away for many years, during which time his son, Idamante has ruled in his absence. The mythological plot purveys a story of life and death and the nature of choices and consequences in war.

The cast of Idomeneo are amongst the best of Britain’s operatic talent, including Robert Murray, Emma Bell, Paul Nilon and Sarah Tynan. Libretto is by Varesco after Danchet.

Katie Mitchell directs this deeply felt masterpiece, following the success of her other Trojan War epic, Purcell’s Dido And Aeneas, which she adapted for the Young Vic in 2009. Other London credits include The Cat In The hat, Waves, Pains Of Youth and Some Trace Of Her for the National Theatre, and The City and Forty Winks at the Royal Court.

The National Theatre

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

The National Theatre welcomes the return of actress and comedienne Catherine Tate, who will be appearing in the latest production of Season’s Greetings by Alan Ayckbourn this Christmas. Theatre tickets for season’s greetings are on sale now.

Marianne Elliott will direct this comedy farce set in the 1980s during the festive season. Tate plays Belinda whose husband Neville has arranged a celebratory evening of Christmas drinks. In true Ayckbourn style, the event soon descends into chaos as misunderstanding; tensions, insecurity and lust interfere with what is intended to be a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

Tate’s previous National Theatre credits include The Prince’s Play and The Way of The World. Other performances include Under The Sky in 2008 at the West Ends Duke of York’s Theatre. Tate is however widely renowned for her work on television, in sketch shows The Catherine Tate Show, Big Train and as Donna, the Doctor’s assistant in Doctor Who.

Marianne Elliott has directed multiple shows at the National Theatre including the Olivier award winning War Horse, still running in the West End. Other credits include Alls Well That Ends Well, Saint Joan and Harper Regan.

Season’s Greeting will be performed in the Lyttelton theatre during December this year.
