Show Overview

Rain Man was a blockbuster movie in 1988, starring Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise. The West End adaptation of this Oscar winning movie is by Dan Gordon and directed by Terry Johnson. The two stars are Josh Hartnett as Charlie and Adam Goodley as Raymond.

Rain Man is the story of the relationship between a Los Angeles car salesman, Charlie Babbitt and his elder Brother Raymond, who has autism and lives in a care home. Charlie is self centred and has never given a thought to the welfare of those around him and when he first goes to meet his brother, it is not because of love or loyalty but because he learns his father has left Raymond his fortune.

Gorden and Johnson, thankfully, did not try to recreate the road movie formula of the original movie but instead focus on the relationship between the two brothers who are mentally and socially polar opposites. Charlie who has led a hedonistic lifestyle in Los Angeles and Raymond whose insular life revolves around Judge Judy and TV quiz shows.

It is a sentimental journey that explores the brothers’ relationship from the initial uncertain meeting to frustration and fear and to the dawning realisation of love and understanding.

There is some fabulous acting, especially by Adam Goodley but Josh Hartnett certainly does himself no harm in his portrayal of Charlie. Rain Man will have you laughing and crying in turn and is thoroughly recommended by Concierge Desk.

RAIN MAN TICKETS – LIVE AVAILABILITY

One of the hottest of London theatre tickets at present is Rain Man, which plays at the Apollo Theatre until 20 December.

It is based on the film of the same name which starred Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman as his autistic brother.

The play stars Josh Hartnett as Charlie Babbitt (the ‘Tom Cruise part’) and has had its problems. The original opening date was put back by ten days as there was a change of director when Terry Johnson, (adaptor and director of a previous smash hit film to play transfer with ‘The Graduate’), took over from David Grindley.

Adam Godley plays the autistic brother; the role which won Hoffman a well deserved Oscar.

Whilst Hartnett has starred in Hollywood blockbusters such as ‘Black Hawk Down’ and ‘Pearl Harbour’ this is his first appearance on stage in twelve years and the last time was while he was at drama school.

Hartnett could never be accused of going for the big bucks. Although he is the face of an Armani aftershave, he has turned down the roles of Batman, Superman and Spider-Man.

His film outings, now, seem to be largely independent, small budget movies with two forthcoming; ‘I come With the Rain’, and ‘August’.

Only time will tell if he can join the critically acclaimed Hollywood actors turned West End stars such as Kathleen Turner and Christian Slater.

The previous driver of Rain Man, sorry, director, David Grindley, has withdrawn from the production because of family reasons, and has been replaced by Terry Johnson. The play also marks the West End debut of some A-List Hollywood actors, such as Josh Hartnett.

A press statement from the producers of Rain Man stated:

Sadly [Grindley] had to withdraw for family reasons. . . Following discussions with David and members of the cast, all roads led to one director. We are lucky that Terry Johnson was able to step in.

The production schedule remains unchanged and all our good wishes go with David.

Rain Man opens in London’s Apollo Theatre on August 28th, and then receives its official opening on September 9th. The show is available to book for theatre tickets until December 20th.

The story for Rain Man the theatre show has been reset in the present day, and stars Josh Hartnett in the Tom Cruise role, as Charlie Babbitt. He has to get used to his autistic elder brother, Raymond, played by Adam Godley. Raymond was originally played by Dustin Hoffman in the Oscar winning film.

It has been revealed that Josh Hartnett will be the latest Hollywood star to appear in the West End. He follows in the footsteps of Jeff Goldblum, David Schwimmer, Kathleen Turner, Gwyneth Paltrow and Julia Roberts. The experience for some of these A listers was less than satisfying; for themselves and for the paying public. It is a brave move because performing on a West End stage is undoubtedly more challenging than appearing in a block buster. It also requires consistent, believable acting night after night, after night.

The play that has lured Hartnett from the security of Hollywood is Rain Man which has been adapted by Dan Gordon and will be directed by David Grindley. Harnett will play Charlie Babbitt and British actor Adam Godley will take on the task of filling Dustin Hoffman’s shoes as his autistic brother Raymond.

Hartnett’s many Hollywood credits include major roles in Black Hawk Down, Pearl Harbor, 30 Days Of Night, The Faculty, The Black Dahlia, Virgin Suicides and Lucky Number Slevin.

Rain Man is the story of the relationship between a Los Angeles car salesman, Charlie Babbitt and his elder Brother Raymond, a sufferer of autism who has been hidden away in an institution for the majority of his life. The self centred hustler Charlie discovers that despite being dysfunctional in many ways, his brother is also extremely gifted in many other ways which ultimately helps Charlie save his ailing business. The relationship develops to take both brothers into realms previously  never experienced, in the case of Raymond, a world outside the institutionalised confines of the hospital, and for Charlie a life consisting of love for his brother that does not revolve entirely around money and himself.

This hugely anticipated London theatre adaptation of the 1988 Oscar winning movie will be at the Apollo Theatre from September. Rain Man tickets and cheap Rain Man tickets for this West End show are available from Concierge Desk London.
