The Little Dog Laughed

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Douglas Carter Beane’s award winning play The Little Dog Laughed is now premiering at the Garrick Theatre in London, featuring a star studded cast. Theatre tickets for the show are on sale now.

Mitchell is a young actor with what his cutting agent Diane describes as a “slight recurring case of homosexuality”. When Mitchell meets and falls in love with rent boy Alex, his hidden sexuality is at risk of exposure, which Diane is convinced will destroy his potential career. Then it turns out that Alex has a girlfriend, and things get a little complicated.

Leading the cast in the role of Mitchell is Rupert Friend, and Tamsin Grieg plays the acerbic Diane. They are joined by Gemma Arterton and Harry Lloyd.

Friend is a regular face on screen and has been seen previously in The Libertine, The Boy in Striped Pyjama’s and The Young Victoria. The Little Dog Laughed will be his debut in the West End.

Grieg first came to our attention as in quirky comedies The Green Wing and Black Books. She has since become a prominent figure on the West End stage appearing the RSC’s Much Ado About Nothing, God of Carnage at the Gielgud Theatre and Gethsemane.

Arterton first appeared on stage at Shakespeare’s Globe, before moving on to the silver screen in St Trinian’s and Quantum Of Solace, and Lloyd recently appeared in A View From The Bridge in the West End.

‘The Little Dog Laughed’ is a new comedy by Douglas Carter Beane which was nominated for a prestigious Tony Award in 2007. It will run at the Garrick Theatre until 10th April. Theatre tickets are already available for all dates.

The show is directed by Jamie Lloyd and is a satire about Hollywood, agents and PR people. The show boasts an impressive cast but the undoubted star is Tamsin Greig. Greig first came to the general public’s attention through television comedies such as ‘Black Books’, ‘Green Wing’ and ‘Love Soup.’ More recent television includes ‘Emma’ and ‘The Diary of Anne Frank.’ Previous theatre credits include ‘Gethsemane’ at the National Theatre in London and the leading role of ‘Beatrice’ in ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ for the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Also in the cast is Gemma Arterton, who has received a lot of attention for her roles in the two St Trinians films’ and as a Bond girl in ‘Quantum of Solace.’ Her television credits include ‘Capturing Mary’ and ‘Lost in Austen’. Her previous professional stage experience was as Rosaline in ‘Love’s Labours Lost’ at Shakespeare’s Globe.

Completing the cast are Rupert Friend, one of the stars of the film ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’ and Harry Lloyd most recently seen in ‘Ghosts’ at the Arcola and ‘A View From the Bridge’ in the West End.

Show Overview

‘The Little Dog Laughed’ at the Garrick Theatre promises to be a huge success; with a superb cast, the Tony award winning play by Douglas Carter Beane has prompted keen interest amidst theatre goers and critics.

‘The Little Dog Laughed’ is about a promising young actor, Michael, who decides he wants to come ‘out of the closet’ as it were; his Agent, Diane, has other ideas. Rupert Friend plays the aspiring film actor who is fed up of living a lie and his tough and uncompromising agent is played by the brilliant Tasmin Greig. She sees no benefit in revealing the truth about his sexuality, only the loss of hardcore female fans.

As the saying goes, ‘the truth will out’ and when Michael falls for a rent boy who has a girlfriend, an awkward love triangle is created and played out.

‘The Little Dog Laughed’ is a funny play performed with great comic timing and understanding and yet it is a caustic play in which the reality of Hollywood hypocrisy is highlighted. In the shallow world of show business, superficiality is the code to which everyone abides by.
