The White Guard

Friday, May 21st, 2010

Mikhail Bulgakov’s acclaimed 20th Century novel The White Guard comes to the National Theatre in London, in its first revival for thirty years. Andrew Upton’s new version (translated by Charlotte Pyke) is currently showing in the Lyttleton Theatre. Theatre tickets are currently on sale.

The White Guard (previously staged as The Day of The Turbins) is set in Kiev, capital of the Ukraine in late 1918. Following the October revolution, the German government lays poised between The White Guard resistance and the Bolshevik army. The Turbin siblings Alexei, Nikolai and Elena are reunited following the death of their mother. Here they become the hub of the local war effort, and the Ukrainians flock to their apartment for sanctuary, where they rally for social change. Meanwhile Elena’s husband Talberg is serving as deputy war minister under the German leader Hetman and aide-de-camp Lieutenant Shervinsky. Elena desperately struggles to hold her family together in the midst of political and social crisis.

Anthony Calf, Richard Henders, Daniel Flynn, Justine Mitchell, Kevin Doyle and Conleth Hill lead the cast in this stark, satirical drama about struggle and change in the time of the Russian revolution.

The White Guard follows Philistines, also by Andrew Upton, and Burnt by The Sun in a series of Russian epics. Howard Davies directs the show for London theatre.

One of the most exciting prospects in 2010 is the third of Howard Davies’ recent productions exploring Russia in the twentieth century. It started with Gorky’s ‘Philistines’ in 2007, a show which received five star reviews left, right and centre. The show demonstrated how well the National Theatre, particularly the theatre in London does ensemble productions. Although it featured star names like Ruth Wilson and Rory Kinnear, who continue to rise in the firmament, egos were left at the door of the rehearsal room ensuring that this was one of the hottest theatre tickets for 2007.

In 2009, an adaptation of the Russian film ‘Burnt by the Sun’ was a hit and received more award nominations. This year a new version of Mikhail Bulgakov’s ‘The White Guard’ comes to the National Theatre. Theatre tickets are currently available for performances from 15th March to 15th June.

The play is described, accurately, as “unrivalled in its depiction of the near-farcical mayhem of civil war across a vast and vivid canvas”.

The show stars Conleth Hill, Justine Mitchell, Marcus Cunningham, Daniel Flynn and Paul Higgins. Hill and Mitchell also starred in ‘Philistines’ and Cunningham was in both ‘Philistines’ and ‘Burnt by the Sun’.

Howard Davies is quite simply one of the best directors working in theatre today. He is an associate of the National Theatre and regularly directs productions for them. In recent years, some of his most notable productions have been Russian epics. In 2007 he directed a fantastic ensemble cast in the 5 star production ‘Philistines.’ This was an adaptation by Andrew Upton of Gorky’s play. Last year ‘Burnt By The Sun’ was based on one of Russia’s finest films. Now, he turns his attention to another Andrew Upton adaptation. This time it is ‘The White Guard’ by Mikhail Bulgakov.

Mikhail Bulgakov was a literary genius who had the misfortune to live under the totalitarian regime of Stalin after the Russian Revolution went sour.

Theatre tickets are on sale now for the National Theatre in London. The cast includes Justine Mitchell and Conleth Hill, both of whom were in ‘Philistines’ and Marcus Cunningham who was in both the previous Russian plays.

Justine’s other theatre credits include ‘Twelfth Night’ for the Royal Shakespeare Company and the role of Hedda Gabler for the Gate Theatre in Dublin. Her films include ‘A Cock and Bull Story’ and ‘Inside I’m Dancing.’ Her recent television credits include ‘Wild at Heart’ and ‘Your Bad Self.’

The Olivier award winning Conleth Hill was in the recent Woody Allen film ‘Whatever Works.’ His television credits include the Jennifer Saunders series ‘Vivienne Vyle’ in which he played Vivienne’s husband.
