Thriller Live

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Thriller Live has been drawing audiences from far and wide since it opened at the West End’s Lyric Theatre in January 2009. It has now announced an extended run until January 2011. Theatre tickets for the hit music and dance show are on sale now.

Originally billed for a four month run, Thriller Live extended after the death of Michael Jackson, the musical inspiration behind the show. As well as extending the West End season, the show has now gone on to launch an extensive world tour.

Press have labelled the show “a total blast” and “a salutary reminder that Michael Jackson’s music is an important segment in the sequence from blues, jazz and Motown to rap and disco. It’s the history of modern pop music, and it’s the music the modern musical theatre forgot about.”
The show features song after song taken from the original pop sensations back catalogue, covering all of the hit albums that shaped his incomparable career. Songs are accompanied by hand-jiving, hot-gospelling and body popping for a mesmerising show of music and movement.

The cast includes Kieran Alleyne in the role of young Jackson, accompanied by Denise Pearson as the Five Star lead vocalist. Roger Wright, Ricko Baird, Ben Foster and John Moabi also lend their Michael Jackson interpretations.

The Menier Chocolate Factory

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

The Menier Chocolate Factory is one of the most successful off West End theatres in London, with shows continuing to transfer to the West End following sell out productions and outstanding reviews. The latest musical to grace the Chocolate factory stage is Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Aspects of Love, directed by Trevor Nunn. The show opens for previews on 7th July and theatre tickets are on sale now.

Michael Arden and Katherine Kingsley were previously announced in the leading roles of Alex Dillingham and Rose Vibert. The pair will now be joined by Rosalie Craig (Giuletta), Dave Willetts (George), Martin Ellis (Marcel) and Rebecca Brewer (Jenny). Also appearing are Louise Lydell, Jill Armour, Ian McLarnon, Savannah Stevenson, David Roberts, Rebecca Trehearne and Dominic Tighe.

Set against a backdrop 1940s France and Italy, young student Alex Dillingham embarks on a passionate love affair with Rose Vibert, an alluring actress. Over three generations, six people brought together learn that love changes everything.

David Willets has recently been seen playing Max in Sunset Boulevard on the West End. Rosalie Craig performed at the Jermyn Street Theatre in Anyone Can Whistle.

Whatsonstage.com award winner Martin Ellis was noted for his performance as Nicely Nicely in Guys And Dolls, directed by Michael Grandage.

This is the first revival of aspects of Love since 1989, when it premiered at the Prince of Wale’s Theatre in the West end – also directed by Nunn.

The Lyric Hammersmith

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

A new play by Richard Bean is showing at the Lyric Hammersmith this autumn as part of a national tour. The Big Fellah runs from 21st September until 16th October, and theatre tickets are on sale now.

The play is set in New York, amongst the Irish-American community. The Big Fellah spans three decades, centring in Michael Doyle, a young fireman who joins the IRA in honour of his Irish Heritage. ‘Big Fellah’ Costello recruits Doyle in order to safe house an escaped killer at his Bronx apartment. However things take a complicated turn as it becomes evident that information is being leaked to the FBI.

Previous works by Bean include England People Very Nice (National Theatre), Harvest and The English Game. On The Side Of The Angels is a short play showing as part of The Great Game – the Afghanistan season at the Tricycle Theatre.

Max Stafford-Clark directs the show, and his company Out Of Joint will co-produce The Big Fellah with the Lyric Hammersmith.

The cast includes Finbar Lynch (Not About Nightingales, Dancing At Lughnasa), David Ricardo-Pearce, Youssef Kerkour, Rory Keenan, Claire Rafferty, Stephanie Street and Fred Ridgway.

The production is designed by Tony Award nominee Tim Shortall (La Cage Aux Folles, Sweet Charity) with lighting design by Jason Taylor and sound by Nick Manning.

The Barons Court Theatre

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

The Barons Court Theatre is one of the most popular fringe venues in West London, and continues to encourage new writing and emerging companies, as well as a range of classic and innovative works. This June, the Barons Court Theatre welcomes former glamour model and public eye celebrity Abi Titmuss to the stage in Dolly Daydream, a new musical by John Philips. Theatre tickets are currently on sale.

Dolly Daydream follows the aspirations of Dolly, a working class girl growing up in a Yorkshire mill town in 1939, as she dreams of being a dancer.

Abi Titmuss originally trained in London at the Central School of Speech and Drama. She also trained as a nurse during these early years; however Titmuss rose to fame following her career as a glamour model and regular appearances on reality television. Since pulling back from the public eye Titmuss has been busying herself on the London fringe and on tour, and her recent credits include Stage Fright (Canal Café Theatre), The Naked Truth, Up ‘n’ Under (Hull Truck national tour) and a Fringe Report Award winning performance in Arthur Miller’s Two Way Mirror.

Dolly Daydream opens on 8 June and will run at the West Kensington venue until 27 June 2010.
