Children should have better access to the arts

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

The UN has a charter on the rights of children that states that children should have access to the arts. However, is the UK upholding that charter and giving the children of Britain the access to the arts that they deserve?

The UK body, Action for Children’s Arts, is intending to launch a manifesto for the UK at their conference this month at London’s Unicorn Theatre.

Article 31 of the UN Convention states that all children in the world have a right to have access to the arts, which includes theatre attendance. The article states:

Every child has the right to rest and leisure, to engage in play and to participate freely in cultural life and the arts. Member governments shall respect and promote the right of the child to participate fully in cultural and artistic life and shall encourage the provision of appropriate cultural, artistic, recreational and leisure activity.

However the Action for Children’s Arts (ACA) believes that the children aren’t receiving the access they should, and wants to raise awareness across the UK, hoping for a change in attitude towards the importance of the arts in the lives of children. They’ll be campaigning towards local authorities, schools and the government.

Children’s Laureate Michael Rosen has filmed a video presentation for delegates of the conference, where he will be stating:

It’s absolutely vital that we see that the one way to investigate the world is through arts – they are vital to all of us but most especially to children.

I think we need a manifesto to give us a focus, key points that people can talk about and sign up to. Then we can start addressing the powers that be to change things. As art workers we are beginning to see that we do have mutual collective interests and the great thing about the manifesto is it helps us see that. I am real advocate for this manifesto and urge everyone to sign up. Everybody join in and we can campaign for action!
