wicked-1

The latest milestone for the hit musical ‘Wicked’ was the London show’s thousandth performance which was the matinee on Valentine’s Day, Saturday the14th February.

The musical opened at the Apollo Victoria Theatre in September 2006 and is now enjoying its third year. It has already been seen by close to two million people and has taken more than £67 million in theatre ticket sales.

The musical is based on a novel by Gregory Maguire who re-imagined the characters created by L Frank Baum in his novel ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’. The musical tells the story of the witches of Oz and how one came to be known as good and one as wicked.

It stars Oliver Tompsett as Fiyero, Harriet Thorpe as Madame Morrible, Kerry Ellis as Elphaba, Diane Pilkington as Glinda and Desmond Barrit as the Wizard.

The libretto for the show was written by Stephen Schwartz and the script is by Winnie Holzman. It is directed by Joe Mantello.

‘Wicked’ is a worldwide phenomenon with productions also running in Japan, Australia, Germany and North America.

The show recently celebrated the highest grossing week of its run when it took £890,000 in the seven days to the 29th of December 2008.

Wicked remains a winner

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

London show Wicked has recently announced an extension on its booking period, which now runs until late September next year.

The ever popular show based on a spinoff of ‘The Wizard Of’ continues to go from strength to strength, taking nearly £20 million in ticket sales this year alone, and totalling in excess of £50 million since it premiered in London in September 2006.

With the producers putting nearly half a million new tickets on sale, Wicked is one show which seems to be unaffected by the current economic climate. It’s no wonder; the production (based on Gregory Maguire’s praised novel) is generally regarded as London Theatre’s number one show. Thousands of London theatre goers flock each week to be dazzled and wowed by a musical that has won in excess of 20 international awards worldwide.

Whether it’s the stunning score and memorable lyrics from Stephen Schwartz, Eugene Lee’s eye popping scenic design, or Winnie Holzman’s magical but moral book, Wicked has something to impress everyone.

But it’s the stars of the show that really shine. Alexia Khadime has delighted audiences since she replaced Kerry Ellis as the misunderstood green witch Elphaba. Dianne Pilkington as the popular blonde Glinda is quite simply glorious and captivating.

If want to experience a great musical and one of the best productions on the London Theatre scene, Wicked is a spellbinding must-see.
