The Mousetrap – 55 Years in the running
Did you know that the St Martin’s Theatre production, The Mousetrap is London’s longest running play, ever? Since 1952, audiences have been gripped to their seats trying to guess ‘whodunnit’ at this traditional thriller that has stood the test of time. That’s just under 30000 performances since the year that King George VI died and Elizabeth was proclaimed Queen of England!
The Agatha Christie play, originally called Three Blind Mice was first broadcast on the radio in 1947 in honour of Queen Mary, Consort of King George V, and was influenced by a true story of the death of a boy whilst in foster care. The original cast of The Mousetrap included Richard Attenborough as Sergeant Trotter and his wife Sheila Sim as Mollie Ralston.
The Mousetrap is set inside hotel Monkswell Manor, newly opened by young couple Mollie and Giles Ralston. Following a huge snow fall, Mr & Mrs Ralston are snowed in with four guests and a traveller who has become stuck in the snow following a collision in his car with a snow drift.
The hotel is visited by Detective Sergeant Trotter, who after arriving on skis warns the occupants that a murderer is on the loose following the suspicious death of a Miss Maureen Lyon in London.
When the body of one of the hotel’s occupants, Mrs Boyle is discovered, it becomes clear that the murderer is already present in the hotel. Guests and hosts all become suspects, but will the true identity of the murderer be found out before it is too late? What is the unexpected twist at the conclusion of the play?
Audiences are traditionally asked at the end of each performance of The Mousetrap not to reveal the identity of the murderer so that the play is not spoiled for future audiences, so the only way to find out is to go see this all time classic!
