London Theatre Tickets - Phantom of the Opera 21st Birthday

After 21 years the West End classic, Phantom of the Opera has come of age!  Since Michael Crawford stunned London and the World as the Phantom when the show first opened in 1986, this incredible Andrew Lloyd Weber musical is still going strong at Her Majesty’s theatre London, and numerous theatres worldwide.  Crawford, then primarily known as the cumbersome Frank Spencer in ‘Some Mothers do ‘Ave ‘Em’, astonished critics and audiences alike with his tremendous vocal talents.

The Phantom of the Opera has continued from strength to strength, enthralling packed audiences night after night, so we decided it was time to remind ourselves what it is all about.

Based on the 1909 novel by French author Gaston Leroux, the musical tells the story of Christine Daae, a young soprano singer who becomes the focus of attention of Erik, the Phantom of the Opera, a mysterious ‘ghost’ with a disfigured appearance who terrorises the Paris Opera, Opera Garnier.  The show is essentially a romantic thriller, as Erik takes Christine under his wing and secretly coaches her singing through her dressing room wall.  Christine quickly achieves recognition and takes on the leading role at the opera, and amazes the audience with her fantastic talent as she ‘sings like an angel’.

However, as with any love story jealousy sets in as Christine’s relationship with childhood friend, Raoul, Viscount de Chagny develops.  Erik decides to make an appearance to Christine and takes her to his secret dark world, beneath the opera house.  The beautiful Christine is hugely disappointed when she realises Erik is ‘neither an angel nor a genius’ as she finally realises his true form but Eric will not allow the love of his life to leave.  Eventually Christine has to swear that she will return to the underground world of her own accord and never love another in order to be released.

As Raoul becomes suspicious that Christine is being taken advantage of by another man he starts secretly watching the singer in an attempt to catch the seducer.  Though initially infuriated with this, Christine eventually confides in her true love and tells him everything.  They secretly plot to escape Paris, but will the Phantom of the Opera allow this to happen?  Come watch the marvel, and enjoy beautifully sung classics including Phantom of the Opera, Masquerade and Music of the Night to find out!

Since the original star studded cast including Michael Crawford as the Phantom, Steve Barton as Raoul and Sarah Brightman as Christine, the Phantom of the Opera continues to attract some of the biggest names in drama and music and is an absolute essential to add to your London Theatre portfolio!
