Spamalot is winner of three Tony Awards including
Best Musical for the 2004-5 season.
Eric Idle (from the original Monty Python team) and John Du Prez have created a medieval pantomime in Spamalot which is adapted from the 1975 Python film, The Holy Grail.
Eric Idle wrote the book and lyrics for Spamalot and collaborated with Du Prez for the music. Idle explained the reason for the title Spamalot, which comes from a line in the movie: “we eat ham, and jam and Spam a lot.”
It was a huge hit on Broadway but the nonsensical Python humour is perfectly suited to the British audience who seem to be thoroughly enjoying this hilarious West End musical. Not without good reason too. It really is pure fun and the eager audiences, familiar with Python material, are in good humour before the show even begins. Everyone seems to be on the same wavelength and included in the same 'in' joke.
Spamalot parodies West End theatre including a spoof Lloyd Webber song entitled 'The Song That Goes Like This'. And in his quest for the Holy Grail, Prince Herbert searches for the perfect West End hit. It's all very funny stuff.
Serious theatre goers might not approve of this over indulgent silliness buy anyone wanting a fun night at the theatre couldn't do better than going to see Spamalot. From the arrival of King Arthur on stage, accompanied by his manservant clicking together two halves of an empty coconut, to the sudden transformation of Sir Lancelot into a dancing queen, this is a fabulously fun theatre experience.
